Render every time again and again.

Why every time I open FCP have to render all the timeline again, when I did it before, it happens all the time, is it normal?

This issue is caused by Final Cut Pro’s automatic Background Render, which often generates corrupted cache files. When you restart the app, FCP fails to read these files and forces you to re-render everything from scratch.

The permanent fix takes just two steps: clear the corrupted files and disable the automatic rendering.

The 2-Step Solution:

  1. Clear the corrupted cache:
  2. • Select your Library in the top-left sidebar.
  3. • Go to File > Delete Generated Library Files...
  4. • Check Delete Render Files, select All, and click OK (you won't lose any edits).
  5. Disable automatic rendering:
  6. • Go to Final Cut Pro > Settings > Playback tab.
  7. • Uncheck Background Render.

Moving forward: Only render when necessary by doing it manually. Press Control + Shift + R to render the entire timeline, or Ctrl + R for selected clips only. FCP will now remember these renders and won't ask you to redo them when you reopen the app.

Then again 12.3 doesn't always update the actual shot you're seeing as you're scrubbing through now. It's beyond broken. Constant force quits and re opens. Great work team!

You are condemning the entire app without reason. The vast majority of us work in Final Cut every day without issues. Yesterday I worked in FCP for 6+ hours with no issues, no crashes, no force quits, flawless playback, and no render issues. That is normal. What you are experiencing is not normal.

I hope you can find and fix your problem. In the meantime, it is inappropriate for you to condemn the entire app just because you are having some kind of local issue.

This is typical.

One person has problems because there is something peculiar about their computer and the way they are working and they condemn the app which millions are using successfully.

It's the old story of the proud mother who was watching her son marching past with all the other members of his regiment and commented that everyone was out of step except for her boy . . .

It's not true that we haven't deleted preferences etc. Op said "Nope. Doesn't work for me" and I said "None of the fixes mentioned above work".

Thank you for all the comments, and I apologise if my message was hasty. Part of it is frustration at spending $10k on an Intel Xeon Mac Pro with 192 GB Ram that is seemingly no longer supported by any of the "pro" apps.

I'm going to try switching background render off again and seeing how long before running into issues.

Whole timeline needs to be re-rendered every time. Let it render for an hour, close the program, open it again and it needs to go again from the start.

This (above) is the behaviour that is most frustrating. I've used FCPX for years without issue, but 12.3 I'm running into all sorts of craziness.

I understand that frustration but that Intel Xeon machine was released in 2019, we are now getting towards the end of 2026.

Seven years in computer time is a lot. And it's not like it does not work anymore. All current versions of Apple pro apps still work on it, although, sure, some of the more recent features involving AI do not.

Of course, it does not help that soon after that mac was released, Apple entered a whole new era with Apple Silicon Macs that give users a lot more bang for the buck.

Render every time again and again.
