iPhone warranty calculated from purchase, not activation

Warranty expiration date calculated from purchase date instead of activation date—Is this a system bug?


Hi everyone,

I am facing a strange issue regarding the warranty period of my new iPhone 17 Pro Max (Deep Blue), and I would appreciate some insights from the community. Here are the details:

  • Purchase Date: May 17, 2026 (Bought by a friend as a gift for me)
  • First Activation Date: July 15, 2026, at 08:43:00
  • Coverage End Date: May 16, 2027, at 23:59:59


Before unboxing the phone, I checked its serial number on the official Apple Check Coverage website (View Coverage - AppleCare & Warranty), and the result explicitly stated that the device had not been activated. After that, I unboxed and activated the phone. However, once setup was complete, the device showed the warranty expires on May 16, 2027. All of my friends who use iPhones have confirmed to me that Apple's warranty expiration date is always based on the first activation date. If I am not mistaken, shouldn't my warranty expiration date be around July 13 or 14, 2027 instead?


This means my warranty is being calculated from the purchase date instead of the activation date, causing me to lose nearly 60 days (2 months) of warranty. Is Apple's system experiencing a glitch with activation dates?


What puzzles me is that back on March 2, 2026, I bought another iPhone 17 Pro Max as a gift for my mother. She unboxed and activated it on April 15, 2026. Her warranty coverage correctly extended until April 14, 2027—giving her a full 365 days of warranty, despite the phone being purchased nearly a month prior.


Why did my mother’s phone get a full year from activation, while my current phone lost 2 months based on the purchase date? Is this a known system error on Apple's end, or has there been a change in how Apple calculates warranty periods?

Here is what Apple says in their support document regarding warranty, which is linked at the bottom of this reply.


The warranty coverage begins on the invoice date of purchase from Apple or an authorized Apple reseller.


If the seller does not accurately report the sale to Apple, then the warranty will default to the date that the product is activated.


Quoted from the Apple document.......


If the purchase date for your Apple product is incorrect


The service coverage information described in the System is based on the date of purchase information available to Apple. Depending on when or whether you registered your product, if you purchased it from an Apple authorized reseller or Apple Store, the estimated purchase date may be incorrect.


If the estimated expiration date of your Apple One (1) Year Limited Warranty or AppleCare agreement for the serial number of your device is incorrect, you will need to have the original sales receipt of your product so that we can update your purchase date.


Update your purchase date with your proof of purchase

The determining factor will be who you or the gifter, purchased the item from. The warranties of other devices are irrelevant unless you have the receipts for all the devices you refer to.


Exactly who is the seller that your friend purchased the device from? Was the seller Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller? If not, then the warranty started at date of purchase from Apple or Apple Authorized Reseller. Most (all?) major resellers are tied into Apple’s support system and Apple knows exactly who sold the device and when it was sold.


Apple and Apple resellers have the ability to provide a gift receipt. Did your friend provide a gift receipt to you? If so, who was it purchased from and when was it purchased?

No. "ALL" other machines do NOT have warranties which activate on the first activation date. If that were the case, let's say you buy a brand new car, but you never drive it for a few months. Do you honestly believe the warranty start date for the car would be the first time you drove it? Of course not. If you buy a new DSLR Camera, the warranty starts the date you bought it. Just about anything you purchase which comes with a warranty starts on the date of purchase.


There is NO point in arguing this with anyone here. This is a user to user only forum, not Apple Support. But the people responding to you are members with years of experience on this forum, who are very knowledgeable about when the warranty starts on devices sold by Apple.


If you're not happy with this, feel free to contact Apple directly. Just don't expect to get the answer you want.


Where do you live? In what country was the phone purchased? Why did it take more than 2 months for the gift to get to you? If the phone was bought in a different country than the one you live and will use it, the warranty may be limited to the country of purchase as well.

Nope. No bug at all. Katana-San is 100% correct that the warranty starts the day the phone was sold from Apple or an Apple Authorized Seller. It has never been based on the date of activation. As suggested, you can contact Apple, but they are not going to change their warranty policy for you as they'd then have to change it for everyone.
