iPhone 17: Red bubble on settings icon won’t go away

I recently got a new iPhone 17 and transferred everything from my previous iPhone using sync. This all worked fine, but for some reason the phone thinks the sync was never completed and shows a red bubble on the settings icon that won't go away until I finish syncing, which I can't do because I no longer have the old phone.

Is there a way to make that notification disappear and/or convince the phone that it doesn't need to finish syncing?

Thanks

I did chat with support. They had me sign out of my phone and back in, and then try to follow the notification steps. This time it gave me the option to send a code to another Apple device, which it did not do previously, and I was able to sync my phone to my iPad which made the notification bubble go away. Kinda strange but it did the trick.

Ah, so my first hunch was correct.

Sorry, I have no new ideas how you can solve this one

Have you tried Apple Support?

Have you checked again to make sure that your old Phone is not still appearing in the list of devices on your new phone using your Apple Account? (This is covered in the Apple document about what to do with an old phone)

On your new iPhone.....tap Settings > Your Name

Scroll down to see the list of devices using your Apple Account

If the old phone appears in the list......select it, then scroll down and tap Remove from Account

You’re getting what you asked for then, with a warning that data you’ve requested to sync doesn’t have iCloud access.

Dig through the iCloud app settings and turn off everything.

Using iCloud for backups or using a PC for backups is just one parr of the data hosting (and sharing) that is available with iCloud.

I too use local backups, as well as using other iCloud services, though not iCloud backups.

Or turn it on, and use it to sync (for instance) playlists between your iPhone and your PC.

I did just turn off all of the settings for iCloud as Mr Hoffman said, and that doesn't make it go away.

When I tap on the notification, it prompts me to sync to the old phone, no other option. Doesn't seem like there is a way to get that to go away, short of maybe resetting to factory settings and restoring from iTunes backup, and maybe not even then, if the backup remembers the incomplete sync status?

Bob, The only option is to resume data sync, and that is not possible because the original phone is wiped clean and not here.

I already have all of the iCloud settings turned off (backup, ADP, iCloud.com). I did just disable all of the "Saved to cloud" options but the bubble doesn't go away. Seems the only way it will is if it's able to sync with my old phone which is not possible

My wife did the sync on my phone. She did hers first and had no problem. Then she did it on mine and it seemed to work fine, but there was a problem with the SIM and I had to reach out directly to the provider. Other than that, the phone works fine.

I don't use iCloud. Never signed up for it. Just want to get rid of of the notification since I can't do what it wants me to do.

You don't use iCloud? How do you backup your iPhone? If you lose your phone and you don't have current backups, your data will be gone.

If you have an Apple Account, which it would seem you must since you own an iPhone, you have iCloud. We don't signup for iCloud. It's built into our phones. Not using it however, may not be a smart move.

Understood, but the question that I asked was whether the "old" phone was "decommissioned" correctly after your new phone was set up.

If it was not, the new phone may still be trying to sync with the old phone. That is likely what is meant when the message indicates that the phone is not syncing to all of the devices listed under your Apple Account.

If you tap on "Some iCloud data is not syncing".....what message or information appears?

I'm a big believer in redundant backups. I do backup to my MacBook Pro, but I also backup nightly to iCloud. Having a full backup just on a computer, to me, is not enough. Things can and do go wrong from time to time.

If you're backing your Mac up using Time Machine then unless you've excluded them your iDevice backups done through Finder will also be included in the Time Machine backups.

I am using Time Machine, but even the best SSD drives can go bad. iCloud Storage is inexpensive. Backing up to the cloud, to me, makes a LOT of sense. As I said, I'm a believer in redundant backups.

I have an Apple One Account, which in addition to Apple Music, Apple TV+ and Games, includes 200GB of iCloud Storage.
