If your have AppleCare+, a repair for this is likely covered.

If you do not have AppleCare+, then you can make a service appointment to have it evaluated. You will receive a cost estimate to repair. I am guessing it will be between $600 and $900 (US $). But that's my guess, you should get an official estimate from an Apple Authorized Service Provider or an Apple Store.

If the crack is cosmetic but the Mac works fine, you could choose to let it be and use it as is.

If the crack impedes normal use of the Mac, then you have two options: (a) repair it; or (b) obtain a new Mac. New laptops start at about $1200 depending on how configured, can be considerably more.

It's not "common" but you have to consider that today's MacBooks are definitely not as sturdy as those in the past. With the never-ending quest for "thinness", compromises have to be made. Glass is thinner, aluminum is thinner, the batteries are thinner. The tolerances between the inside LCD glass panel and the top case/keyboard are very small. Even though one is careful, even a very small object like a hard crumb between the inside glass panel and the top case (especially near the hinge area where your crack supposedly is) can quite easily cause a crack when the lid is closed

I'd say If it's only the cover glass and not the LCD panel glass, just live with it. To find out exactly what it is, you can take it in to the Genius Bar for a free evaluation and options.

It's very uncommon. My employer has thousands of Mac laptops in use and the only time this has been seen is when there has been accidental damage. A part defect is always possible but as I said, rarely seen at least at this facility.
