Ignoring that iMac lacks Face ID, I might think the TrueDepth camera system would continue work if I do not obscure the dot protector, the infrared camera, the flood illuminator, or the proximity sensor, but do obscure (just) the main “selfie” camera.

Some experimentation with a yellow stickie note cut thinly should prove (or disprove) this.

Having just tried this sticky-note test locally on an iPhone with a sensor layout much more conducive to this test (not the iPhone model shown below!), it appears the main camera is not used for Face ID.

People who ask you to guess their age generally want an answer years younger. They are never amused if you guess their actual age.

I asked my 3-year old granddaughter how old she thought I am. After looking carefully at me, she said, "about 2 years old." Basically, she considers me to be slightly younger and less mature than she is. (By the way, she can count to 100 so she could have answered very differently.)

I am looking forward to the day when I can outsource all my IT and computer stuff to her.

This is what Apple says about how Face ID works on iPhones and iPads.

About Face ID advanced technology - Apple Support

"The technology that enables Face ID is some of the most advanced hardware and software that we’ve ever created. The TrueDepth camera captures accurate face data by projecting and analyzing thousands of invisible dots to create a depth map of your face and also captures an infrared image of your face. A portion of your device's neural engine — protected within the Secure Enclave — transforms the depth map and infrared image into a mathematical representation and compares that representation to the enrolled facial data."

"Face ID matches against depth information, which isn’t found in print or 2D digital photographs. It's designed to protect against spoofing by masks or other techniques through the use of sophisticated anti-spoofing neural networks."

You've certainly got yourself a handful there!
