The phenomenon where images are placed side-by-side or split into multiple thumbnails (grids or multiple previews) within the Photos app or during slideshows on iPadOS is due to automatic viewing or layout settings of memories/albums.

There are no longer real slideshows in Photos on the iPad. When we use the command "Play as slideshow" we are now creating Memory movies. Slideshows are memory movies in disguise, and we can only customize them with the controls for Memories.

When I want a real slideshow I create it with Keynote. It is more work, but I can arrange my photos as I want them and have not to watch Photos mutilate my photos by cropping them or rearranging them in in an order that imakes no sense.
Thank you, Richard, the artificial intelligence in Photos has interesting ideas, how a photo could be composed with advantage, but occasionally it is making me angry, when Photos is cropping a photo without asking for permission, after I spent a long time to compose the shot just as I want it, so that the weight of the colors is balanced and leading lines are directing the attention towards a beautiful object, e.g. a swan floating on lake, and then photos is cropping the image to a square format, with the swan decapitated and some stranger moved to the center of attention. Or occasionally, my panoramic shots are cropped to the square format. This is making it hard to recognize our own photos. I have disabled the tiled view everywhere where it is possible.
