Some apps on my new iPhone 17 keep crashing and fail to update

Does anyone have any real answers to why some of my apps on my iPhone 17 (less than 30 days old) crash? Why apps on the App Store won’t update at times when there was an update available? My iPhone 15 started doing this randomly while on vacation and never turned returned to normal. I then received a replacement iPhone 15 from Verizon. Less than 30 days later, it began to do the same thing. All the resetting of settings, etc. don’t work. I feel I wasted my time upgrading when I’m now having the same issues with the iPhone 17. App examples are Yahoo, Netflix, Hulu, Arlo Secure, PayPal, DoorDash, Walmart. A host of others.

Anyone know any real permanent fixes?

Perhaps a long shot:

Do you have a 3rd party VPN installed, even if you are not using it? If so, delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN, then restart your device. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile. Updates sometimes "break" VPN, and it needs to be removed. If that fixes it, you can try reinstalling VPN, but probably shouldn't.

all the apps I’m saying don’t work on my iPhone work fine on my iPad.
I also update my system to the latest iOS last night.
Ive spoken with Verizon tech people and Apple’s tech people. They all tell me to do the generic stuff that I’ve already done like resetting all settings, network settings, my phone in general. So far, I just receive responses that don’t come to a resolve.

If your device is under MDM your IT administrator can control what apps can be updated and which cannot. You need to contact your IT support.

You are paying for iCloud storage, which is used for syncing and backing up data. It does not add any storage to your iPhone, which will never have more than it did when you bought it. To check your iPhone’s storage go to Settings/General/iPhone Storage.

It is not possible to buy more storage for an iPhone; it will never have more than it did when you bought it. What you bought is iCloud+ storage that is used for backing up and also for syncing to other devices. Here is an explanation→What's the difference between device storage and iCloud storage? - Apple Support

iCloud+ has 2 independent functions. iCloud backups, and iCloud sync. It’s confusing because they both have the same name prefix. But they have no connection with each other. Go to Settings/[your name]/iCloud. You will see a bunch of switches (with iOS 16 or later also tap Show All). When you turn on a switch that data type will sync to iCloud. If you do this on multiple devices that share an Apple ID the selected data will sync to all of those devices.

You can also turn on iCloud Backups. This will back up your phone every night if the phone is plugged in, connected to Wi-Fi and locked.

But note that these are independent functions; anything that you sync by the first method will be excluded from the iCloud backups.

You get other benefits with iCloud+

  • Hide my Email, which lets you access websites without giving away your primary email account (and also track who they sell your identity to)
  • Private Relay, which is sort of a super VPN (at much lower cost than commercial VPN)
  • Custom email domain, so you can create a personalized email address that forwards to your Apple ID email (such as jane@doe.com)

So, for me last night, Strava, along with EVERY third-party app I have, wouldn't open. I offloaded an app I barely use (not Strava), redownloaded it, and every app opened.
Care to explain how that might be Strava's fault?

Regardless of the issue, this is a user to user only forum. I have no clue why "some" people seem to be having issues with 3rd party apps after the iOS 26.6 update. But I can tell you with some degree of confidence, this is not a significant issue, which affected the majority of users. If it was, this forum would be flooded with people complaining, yet it's not. The tech press would be all over this, yet they're not.

All of my devices were updated to iOS 26.6, yet not one of them has had any issues opening any 3rd party app. What no one here on this user only forum can determine, is what common thread exists for those whose 3rd party apps wouldn't open.

Have you provided feedback to Apple? This is the best way to alert Apple to issues, here --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

There’s a common theme though, several users on this thread have exactly the same issue, and there will be many, many more out there who do not have the inclination or wherewithal to post on this thread. Coupled with the fact that the author of this thread has had confirmation that it is a software issue from Apple (I presume) then I feel it is indeed a common problem - maybe only to a small batch of phones, but it does seem odd that the wife and I, plus several other users around the world are having exactly the same problems. It may be related to a specific app, or a dodgy bit of hardware on a limited number of phones - but there is no denying there is a common theme, however small the numbers.

You’re quite right that it is a small number of users

from the evidence so far, and I have reported it to Apple via the link you (I think) posted earlier - thanks for that.

For the record, I don’t think it’s 26.6 issue as we had the problems prior to that uplift.

Unfortunately we’re at the mercy of Apple. I was told it was a software issue and has nothing to do with who my service is with or some of the other things I mentioned. The fact I don’t experience this on my iPad, just my phone is why I’ve been so perplexed. Sure hope they resolve this sooner than later. It’s been a month and half of this for me.

The wife and I are having the same issues, both iPhone 17 - apps "open" but immediately get hidden, only 3rd party apps. Update all apps via the app store did work, but then didn't when I tried it again. The last fix I had was to uninstall just one app (Strava), reinstall it and they all worked afterwards. There's evidently a common issue here, and I hope Apple get it sorted as it's causing problems.

There is nothing for Apple to sort. You found the problem was a defective app. Apple has no control over 3d party apps.

Yep, fully aware none of you are not Apple support/tech, but when they don’t have a fix (found that out after beginning this discussion), you look for helpful resources anywhere you can get them.

And it was never determined my issue was specific to MDM, someone attempting to be helpful mentioned that. And because I am attempting most of the steps advised, I put a ticket in with my IT department. It was determined from my company that my MDM profile wouldn’t be causing a multitude of apps to just crash.

As I previously mentioned, Apple’s Senior Tech advised there’s some type of software issue going on and there’s no real fix yet. Until there’s a resolve, I’m going to leave this open for the people who are dealing with the problem to chime in if they do get an answer before I do.

Your POV is valid, but when it’s all said and done, Apple will have to help us Apple iPhone users fix this because it’s happening with their product. A brand new iPhone 17 shouldn’t be having any issues other than a low battery if you don’t charge it. Yet, here some of us are fighting to open apps we need on a regular.

You’ve attempted to help and your fixes didn’t work. That’s okay. This still goes back to the company who made the phones. That’s Apple. Doesn’t have to impact the billions of users for it still be a problem the few of us need help fixing given we’ve never dealt with this type of problem before.

All we want is helpful tips or an update received from another user experiencing the problem if/when we get an answer from Apple because so far, the only answer they have is it’s a software issue. Some people may not have known that until that read this thread.
