Inside my folders are not sorting items by name

Hi,

I'm not sure how the settings have changed on my MacBook Air 2017. I'm using Monterey 12.7.6 and for some reason when I create new folders (or open existing folders) on my desktop, the view inside the folders no longer sort by name. I'm not talking viewing and sorting on the desktop, but sorting inside the folders. I hope this makes sense. I don't use finder as the options in this auto sort my desktop folders.

I'm not sure what you mean by ". I don't use finder as the options in this auto sort my desktop folders." The Desktop itself is a folder. Each folder inside that an be sorted independently.

Does your Finder folder look like this?

with the More (•••) menu including "Sort By? Choosing groups or other things may interfere sort rather differently.

Or with icons

It works the same way.

If this isn't what you mean, include screenshots using the

icon below the text entry field.

As our friend, @RIchard.Taylor, has posted, each folder can be customized to display its contents in several ways, including alphabetically by file name, in a list or even in columns.

As to whether or not you use Finder, you can bet that you are using it every time you are manipulating files and folders on your Mac.

As D.I. Johnson indicated, Finder is an app that is the File Management System for a Mac. In Windows the same sort of File Management System is called Explorer.

I'm guessing you mean the Recents menu item in the Finder Sidebar:

"Recents" is a selection in the menu of lots of apps. This is an example of a Smart Folder. It doesn't hold files, but it points to files based on special criteria. The usual thing would be to sort this particular folder by Date Last Opened, since that's what Recents is about. Most "Recents" type folders or selection dialogs will show all the files in the selected folder. In the case of the Finder Recents, it shows all the files in on the Mac, more or less. This is entirely normal. You are not required to look at the whole list.

I seldom view my files by icon-- there's just not enough information there. I use the List view. Group is None. I change the sort order just by clicking on the titles of the columns: if I click on Name, then it sorts by name, etc.If I click again, it changes the order between 0 first or Z first. It's the same for the other columns.

If you would like to see just the files you've used in the last 90 days, for instance, you can make your own Smart Folder.

First, open the Search Field by clicking the big Q in the upper right of a Finder Window:

and put a period in the Search Field, since every file has one of those:

Then Click "This Mac" on the left side:

so you look through all the files.

Then click on the + to add new criteria

Then you can enter the search criteria

To find the files last opened within the last 90 days.

Then Save your Smart Folder

Name it, maybe Last 90 Days, and it will show up in the Sidebar just like Recents does, but it won't include all your files-- just the last 90 days. And then you can sort this any way you like.

There's information about making Smart Folders here:

Thank you for your visual, it helps. The finder icon, shows my recents. Under "Group" it shows None and "Action" shows Sort By and was "kind" and I changed it to name and now everything on my computer is showing in recents! 10 Years of everything! Not sure what is going on with my MacBook now. It's frustrating for sure!

As for finder, I don't click on the icon in the dock, unless I want to see the recents. I use the menu at the top of the screen when needed. I just didn't realize it was all part of "Finder".

I notice from the example the screenshots are different. Where you show “Recents” above “Favorites” that disappeared and shows under my “Favorites” which has everything on my computer since I bought it 10 years age.

I tried to create the smart folder by clicking on the finder icon in the dock and it just adds another “Recents” under the “Favorites” section on the side bar. Where you show “This Mac” next to it you have “Utilities” and mine doesn’t show that, instead it shows “This Mac” and “Recents”. So I tried again to create a smart folder and it opens another window to “Save As” I enter Recents and then my options shows show: Saved Searches, Library, Users, Macintosh HD, MacBook Air. Is there a way to reset the finder settings to the original settings?
