Adding an external SSD - not being recognized

Hello. I’m trying to add an external SSD to my MacBook Pro M5 Max. It’s running macOS Tahoe 26.5.2. It seems to recognize it as an accessory, but does not appear in finder or the disk utility. I’ve tried making sure it’s supposed to recognize it but I’m having no luck. I’ve tried using the cable that came with the SSD, the cable that came with my Mac, and a lightening cable. When connected, there’s a light on the drive that lights up but nothing happens on my Mac. I’m at a loss to know what to do next.

No problem.

Hold down the Option key while you click the solid Apple in the top left corner of your screen.

Choose "system information: which is the top choice.

a screen very similar to my example opens.

choose USB from the list at the left

if anything resembling your drive shows, choose that.

That IS the definitive diagnostic tool.

If that drive has adequate power and adequate cables, it can not be used, repaired, or erased. it is not functional.

What does it say in:

Option-AppleMenu > System information...

... under whatever port you are using, like USB

You asked for help. I provided help.

You can attempt to run any number of different diagnostics against that drive. None will work.

The most fundamental issue facing any drive is whether it is seen correctly in Disk Utility.

Without that, nothing else tells you anything.

Once you get that, there are MANY more things you can do to get it working.

Now without that, cable or port issues might show up in the USB pane of Option-AppleMenu > System Information > USB

Check Finder > Settings > General and make sure that External disks is check marked to show up on the Desktop.

Check also the Sidebar tab settings there, too.

A Drive is not 'recognized' by MacOS.

Only Mounted Volumes are manipulated with MacOS.

the Grand Arbiter between raw Drives and mountable Volumes is Disk Utility.

A drive that will not reveal its make&model and a reasonable non-Zero size/capacity in Disk Utility (set to 'show all devices') either does not have enough power to operate properly, or has failed.

in general, Rotating Magnetic drives (NOT SSD drives) can not get enough power off Bus power alone to operate correctly.

Can’t initialize something that’s not there. The SSD drive is not being recognized as an external drive. Yes I’ve ticked the boxes to look for external drives. As I said, it acknowledged that the device was an accessory but not an external SSD. It does not appear in disk utility ( yes I checked the box). If I plug in a thumb drive it appears (I’m using a USB-C multifunction adapter to accomplish that) but if I plug in the SSD - nothing.

It’s brand new and as I said there a light that lights up when I plug it in. Thanks, but your opinion is less than helpful. I was hoping there some sort of diagnostic tool or something that might help.

I’m sorry, but I don’t know how to get to option-apple menu. I’m feeling rather put upon here when I asked for help, not a lecture on what I should know about Apple software. If I knew that, I wouldn’t be asking for help. Thank you but I’m done with this exercise in futility.
