How to remove a contact from a contact list

I’m trying to remove contacts from a contact list without luck. I’ve tried highlighting the contacts I want to remove from the list and hitting the delete button on the keyboard without luck. I’ve also tried highlighting the contact and going to the edit button both in the list and the top menu, again without luck. I have an Apple MacBook Air with the latest OS. Can anyone help?

MacBook Air 15″, macOS 26.6

Re: "How to remove a contact from a contact list"

Create and change lists in Contacts on Mac - Apple Support

Eg: says:

"Remove contacts from a list

  1. Go to the Contacts app on your Mac.
  2. Select the list in the sidebar.
  3. Select the contacts you want to remove from the list.
  4. Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
  5. Click Remove From List.
  6. To delete the contacts from the Contacts app, click Delete."

Thank you for trying that ... sorry it didn't help.

This earlier discussion thread says that you cannot delete contacts from "Smart" lists" "Remove from Contact" option greyed out o… - Apple Community

Perhaps the list in question is a "Smart" list!

Apple support's article:

Create and change Smart Lists in Contacts on Mac - Apple Support

Eg: says:

"Edit a Smart List

You can’t add or remove contacts directly in a Smart List.

To change who’s included in the Smart List, you must change its criteria.

  1. Go to the Contacts app on your Mac.
  2. Select a Smart List in the sidebar, then choose Edit > Edit Smart List.
  3. Change, add or remove conditions.
  4. Click OK."

Ok thanks. To confirm, you are attempting to remove a Contact that is not in a read-only account such as Google and Yahoo? That Support document explains "you must delete the contacts directly in Google or Yahoo, for example."

Other than that suggestion I'm out of ideas for now.

I did experience an odd Contacts behavior recently. In attempting to resolve it I used "Look for duplicates..." which found a number of duplicated Contacts. That fixed things. It seems unrelated to your concern though.
