iPhone 8 Plus battery drains rapidly overnight after replacement

iPhone 8 Plus battery begin draining rapidly: 100% to 54% overnight. Culled apps and had battery replaced at Apple Store genius bar. Still drained battery overnight.

any ideas, especially those not involving purchase of a new phone, will be very much appreciated.

(this phone’s user is comfortable with it and not good with adapting. Likes the screen size. Uses are limited—message, mail, photos—so no benefit from “better” models.)

The phone is regularly charged, frequently overnight. The battery charge goes to 100%. Charging is not the problem. I want to know about the discharging.
The finest question I can put is: why does an iPhone 8 Plus with a newly installed battery that is fully charged drop to 54% charge over an eight hour period of non-use?

Overnight is when many of the background processes are performed, so that is why it is recommended to charge your phone all night, every night. That way you don't experience UI lag while you are using the device. This is especially true after an OS update and will continue for about 4 days.

If you are only seeing 1 or 2 bars for your cellular connection, then it requires much more battery power to maintain that connection to a distant tower and doing that for 8 hours while you don't even need the network is simply wasting your battery for no reason. I am guessing that is also a contributing factor for you along with the normal background processes.

If it has been longer than the 4 days after an update, then view the apps that are using your battery. Those that show Background Activities continue to drain your battery, even when the app is not being used.

Non-use is the operative word. Just because the phone isn't actively in your hands being actively used, doesn't mean the phone isn't doing anything while idle. If you want to see what is using your battery, open Settings > Battery and you'll see what apps and processes are using the battery. Typical battery hogs are social media apps, from Meta, like Facebook/WhatsApp/Instagram. If they are in the background, they continue to update in the background, which is a Meta issue, not an iPhone issue. For this reason, I force close Social Media apps when I'm not actively using them. Mail updates if you have push enabled. Background activities are constantly running.

I don't care what my iPhone does while I sleep. It's ALWAYS plugged in to charge, so anything it does is not important to me.

Why are you not doing as Apple recommends and plugging your iPhone into the power supply at night and leaving it connected all night......every night?

You start everyday with a fully charged battery and it should last all day into the evening when you connect it to the power supply again......unless.....you are using power hungry apps and spending a lot of time watching movies or playing games.

It is impossible to overcharge the battery, if that might be what you are thinking. Check out this link for more tips:

Please take the advice Bob Timmons offered. You're not doing your phone's battery ANY favors by NOT plugging it in to charge when you go to bed at night. You're depleting the battery faster, not waking to a fully charged battery ready for a full days use. When plugged in at night, it indexes data, backsup and doesn't use the battery when it's plugged in. If you truly want to make this phone last longer, what you're doing won't help with that.

Perhaps I was not clear in stating the problem.

The iPhone 8 Plus seem to be discharging more rapidly than it should’ve as it was used during the day. As a test, I charged it fully and let it sit unused overnight (overnight because if I had attempted to do this during the day, it would have been used).

In the morning after, probably eight hours of no use at all, the battery had gone down to 32%. Apple’s genius bar agreed that the battery was defective, and replaced it.

As an ancient battery, it was, of course, below 80% and so “defective”, so the phone may have had other problems as well?

To test that again, charged it to 100% and left it overnight. By morning, it had discharged to 54%.

So my questions are what is likely causing that? What can I do about it?
