MacBook Air unable to input data into Excel cells

Unable to input data into Excel

I have two Mac computers.

iMac (2017) running Ventura 13.7.8

MacBook Air (2025) running Tahoe 26.6.1

I have installed Office 365 on both, checked that they are both up to date.

I created an Excel file on the iMac and saved it to iCloud.

Opening the same file from the icloud on the Macbook Air, all data appeared normal until I tried to edit the file but was unable input any data into any cell.

As a test I opened a new file from the "New from template" menu (Take a tour) on both computers.

The iMac worked perfectly but the MacBook Air would not accept any data into any cell.

Any help with this problem will be appreciated.

Sounds like you may not have signed into your MS365 account on the MacBook Air.
You need to be signed in to activate the license that allows you to save, and edit.

Agreed here. That's the first thing I'd check. If you are not signed in to your MS365 account on the Mac in question, you will only be able to open the document, not edit or save it.

Open any MS365 app then open the first (leftmost) menu item and look for "Sign In"

... as in Word > Sign In ...or... Powerpoint > Sign In.

You only need to do this in one of the apps, the sign-in will apply to all of them.

Hi,

When Excel for Mac refuses to accept typed data into cells on a specific machine like your MacBook Air, it is usually caused by a frozen edit state, corrupted app preferences, or restricted macOS folder permissions rather than a problem with the template itself.

Microsoft help page says:

Quick Fixes to Try

  • Click the Formula Bar: Select a cell and click directly into the fx formula bar at the top instead of the cell itself to see if text registers.
  • Toggle Edit Settings: Go to Excel > Preferences > Edit, uncheck "Edit directly in cell," close the settings, reopen them to re-check it, and restart Excel.
  • Check Sheet Protection: Look at the Review tab to ensure "Protect Sheet" is turned off
