File sharing in Pages 14.4 disrupted by the existence of new version. Where are the file changes stored?

I am using Pages 14.4 on MacOS Sequoia. I created a shared document in Pages, which is stored on iCloud drive, before Apple Creator Studio came out. I have had this document open for a long time, since before Apple Creator Studio came out. Typically Pages autosaves and I can just close a document when I am done. It must be storing my changes locally and performing updates to the file in the background. Recently I closed the file. It is a good thing I made a PDF beforehand because none of the many changes that I had made were recorded in the iCloud document. I had no issue with these file changes being made beforehand. I made the document with my, now old, version of Pages. Why can I no longer save to it? How can that change while I have the document open. Where is the local file that contained all my changes? And why does creating a new version of an app disable the functionality of the old version?

Give this a read, especially the minimum system requirements for Pages sharing and collaboration.

Collaborate on documents in Pages, Numbers, and Keynote on iPhone, iPad, and Mac - Apple Support

Provided you have Sequoia v15.6 or later installed, both Pages v14.4 and v14.5 are end-of-life, and have been superceded by Pages v15.3.1.

One should not leave Pages documents open for an extended period on an Internet-served cloud storage location (e.g. iCloud Drive) because outages can and do occur which may hose autosave or your shared document state.

I had a working application. A new version of the application was released and I chose not to upgrade. That is my choice. But it is wrong for the introduction of the new app to break the features of the older app.

The document changes are stored locally in a file on the system. That file clearly still exists since the app was not quit and the changes were not uploaded to the cloud. Therefore there should be a means to recover those changes.

BTW, your admonishment is not useful in solving the current problem.

People skills. I was not admonishing you. Been doing this for 16 years and not my style. That last paragraph was meant to be instructive as others have been burned by iCloud outages.

If you did not install Pages v14.5 or later, then they couldn't have impacted your document. However, since I do not use iCloud Drive for Pages documents anymore, I am uncertain I can clear this up for you.

If you did choose Collaborate when sharing that Pages document on iCloud Drive, then those linked minimum system requirements may have some bearing on your current issues — even without updating Pages. If Autosave stores your changes somewhere when it is unable to save, I have never encountered where that might be on the local or iCloud storage.

If you have access to Microsoft Word v16.31 or later, you can open that PDF you created and it will be converted to a Word DOCX document which you can save and reopen in Pages. That may recover missing content for you.
