Apple one care for family

I purchased a MacBook for my college student son on Apple.com. I logged in with my credentials, bought the MacBook, and added Apple One Care for it. I assumed he would also add his AirPods and iPhone. The MacBook arrived, and he signed into his new MacBook using his Apple ID. However, since my son wasn’t the original owner, the MacBook wouldn’t activate Apple One Care. I reached out to Apple support, and they informed me that canceling the subscription would make the device ineligible for my son’s Apple One Care. On the other hand, logging in on the MacBook would cover it, but I wouldn’t be able to add his iPhone and AirPods. Consequently, I had to cancel Apple One Care, rendering his device ineligible for it. This entire process seems absurd. How am I supposed to log in on Apple.com as my son to purchase a MacBook and assign Apple One Care to it?

Apple Care One is personal only, not available for families so all devices covered by Apple Care One must be logged in to the Apple Account that has Apple Care One. associated with it.

To get Apple Care One for your Son, it had to be started from his device under his account.

If his Apple Account is part of Family Sharing then the Apple Care One subscription would be charged to the Family Sharing Organizer's payment method.

The mistake is believing your Apple Care One would over his devices. It does not work that way.

The only “mistake” I made was buying it on Apple.com. Any other outlet I would not have needed to enter my Apple ID for purchase. As soon as my son signs in the device, he would be allowed access to purchase AppleCare One and cover his devices. Apple oversteps here and I probably will never purchase another item for my family on Apple.com. Apple wildly assumes that everyone is a SINK.

Using your Apple account for purchase has no relation to what Apple Account is logged in to the device and as such no relation to what Apple Carer One is active on the device.

Again, you seem to be assuming things not in evidence as they say.

Once you received the device, you need to set it up and enter the Apple Account that will be used with it, it is at this time Apple Care can bet set up on it.

If you purchased Apple Care during the purchase of the device then it requires an Apple Account to link it to, but again, you did not have to buy it at that time.

You seem to be unaware of what happens which is why I am posting this. I signed in Apple.com, purchased a device, and purchased the AppleCare One. Apple sends me the device, I give it to my student who logs into the device with their credentials. I get an email from AppleCare one stating someone else has logged into the device and if I don’t log into the device my AppleCare one is cancelled. I also get, in my signed in account, the option to add 2 devices that I am signed into (not my kid’s devices). I don’t want my other devices covered. They are covered through my employer.

I now have to cancel the AppleCare One and when I contacted support they informed me that the new device is now ineligible for AppleCare one if I cancel it. The support mentions that my kid is not the original owner. Since it was purchased with my Apple ID, they assigned the AppleCare One and the device to me. I don’t really care why. I do know I wanted to have AppleCare one on his new device and his other two devices but this Apple is telling me is impossible. The only way this happens is by using Apple.com to purchase a device.
