Anyone else hate the iPhone 17 Air?

I have been so disappointed in the iPhone 17 Air. The camera is poor quality, the battery life is not as promised, it’s gets hot when charging and I have weird touchy things happen with volume. I started a return but had to wait for the find my delay to clear, when I follow d up through messaging, no one responded and I ran out of the return window.

📱Facing iPhone heating issues? Here's what worked for me:

1️⃣ Backup on iCloud/iTunes

2️⃣ Log out of Apple ID

3️⃣ Erase (Keep eSIM Data)

❌ DO NOT restore from backups! Set up as new iPhone. Wait 2-3 days - no issue! That Indicates...

✅ No hardware/ iOS issue

Now...

📦 Restore data gradually

🔍 Find app/settings causing heat

My experience says this is purely caused by some third-party app that you may have installed.

I am not aware of the ambient temperature in which you are using the iPhone. However --> Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable ...

Store the device where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range might temporarily shorten battery life and could cause the device to turn off. Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to higher ambient temperatures. Using an iOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.

If photos were your priority, you probably should have chosen one of the iPhone 17 models. I'm not saying that the iPhone Air's camera is bad – but it only has one camera: a Main camera that can act as a 48 MP 1x camera or as a 12 MP 2x camera. It lacks a 0.5x Ultra-Wide camera (which I find of great use even on a much older iPhone).

As for battery life, Apple advertises "Up to" figures for video playback – which is probably a "best case" scenario. That doesn't mean you're going to get "Up to" 22 hours or 27 hours if you do something that causes the phone to work harder (e.g., playing games). Also note that if you want battery charge life similar to that of 17-series phones, you can get and use an optional iPhone Air MagSafe Battery pack. If you have a fully charged iPhone Air and a fully charged battery pack, you might get 50% more charge life (guess) than with a fully charged iPhone Air alone.

Poll Taking is against the terms of use for this forum. If you hate the phone so much, sell it and go buy something else.

The measure of battery health deterioration/drainage is subjective and can vary depending on individual usage patterns. There is no universal standard to determine whether the battery health deterioration/drainage is normal or abnormal because it heavily relies on how the battery is used and maintained.

  1. About the battery usage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch ...
  2. Batteries - Maximising Performance - Apple (IN)
  3. iPhone Battery and Performance
  4. About Charge Limit and Optimised Battery Charging on iPhone - Apple Support (IN)

Try to monitor Battery usage by iPhone Activity as shown below

What is shown under battery usage? Checking that would give you an indication of the usage behavior.

  1. Background Activity
  2. Notifications
  3. Connected to Charger
  4. Or any Other

Try some of these options too.

To prolong the life of your iPhone battery, you can follow these tips and best practices:

To prolong the life of your iPhone battery, you can follow these tips and best practices:

  1. Optimize Battery Charging: Enable the "Optimized Battery Charging" feature on your iPhone. It helps reduce the wear on the battery by slowing down the battery aging process. You can find this option in Settings > Battery > Battery Health. About Optimized Battery Charging on your iPhone - Apple Support (IN)
  2. Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, can negatively impact your battery life. Avoid exposing your iPhone to excessive heat or cold, such as leaving it in direct sunlight or in a freezing car.If your iPhone or iPad gets too hot or too cold – Apple Support (UK)
  3. Use Original Chargers and Cables: Always use Apple's original chargers and cables or certified third-party accessories. Low-quality chargers or cables can damage the battery and reduce its lifespan. Identify counterfeit or uncertified Lightning connector accessories - Apple Support (IN)
  4. Avoid Draining the Battery to Zero: Charge it whenever the charge becomes lower than 20%. The rest is up to you when to charge. how long to charge, how often to charge, which adapter to use starting from 5W to 140W USB-C Power Adapter etc.
  5. Optimize Display Settings: Adjust your display settings to optimize battery life. Lower the screen brightness, enable auto-brightness, and use shorter screen timeout durations. Adjust the display and text size on iPhone - Apple Support (IN)
  6. Minimize Background App Refresh: Limit the number of apps allowed to refresh in the background. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and disable it for apps that don't require real-time updates. Switch apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)

this is the second post mentioning a poll?

It should be pretty easy to see why it was a poll, when the title of your post asks......."Anyone else hate the iPhone 17 Air?" That is a polling question. Had you simply said, something like Issues with iPhone 17 Air and then posted the concerns you posted, it wouldn't be a poll. There's an old saying........"you attract more bees with honey." When you post you hate something or how incredibly disappointed you are, you don't get much help that way.

What I find confusing is why you chose the Air, if photos and battery life were really important things to you? Not every iPhone model meets the needs of every person. For someone who wants the best battery life and cameras, buying the phone with the smallest battery and only one camera, honestly doesn't seem the best iPhone for them. I get that you tried to return it, but you listed only excuses as to why you didn't. None of them Apple's fault.

I am sure they recognized the title was rhetorical.

the camera wasn’t a priority, I had just always seen apple as leading the industry on these things. My children have SEs because they like the button and even the quality of their cameras are much better.

my issue is that I’d have to take a $300 bath because the second hand selling prices of this phone isn’t great, even in used mint condition. I always buy out of pocket which is a non-trivial investment.

I agree that this community is pretty toxic for a “support community” as earlier I asked it I could keep a lost phone that I found and mostly got it’s not your phone replies and return it to the police but thing is the police in my area are corrupt so would just keep a phone that hasn’t been set up and when I said that I was told i was trying to keep it even though it wasn’t mine so what should I do?

i just ended up returning it to the original place i found it so f this

If you consider suggesting you do the right thing is toxic, then so be it. We're "toxic" for the right reasons. But this has nothing to do with the topic the Author of thread posted about.

The people who replied to you are correct. That iPhone 15 isn't your phone. It belongs to someone else. Saying so is not being "toxic" - it is being honest, even if you personally do not like the message.

If I remember correctly, you said that the iPhone 15 was not set up yet. So the true owner of that iPhone 15 might have just gotten it, and not had time to set it up yet. How would you feel if you got a new (to you) phone, and that phone "disappeared" forever before you could even use it?

I know that I would not be happy if I left my iPhone somewhere, and someone decided to keep my phone. And it's several years older than that iPhone 15.

We clearly come from a generation where our parents did a better job teaching us "right from wrong."
