Photos not visible in library after moving to albums on iPhone

There is no "move to album" in Photos on an iPhone or Mac, just "Add to album". This way we can add the same photo to several album without having to duplicate it, if we want to have a photo in several albums.

Albums do not need much additional storage, because they are not storing the photos, just referencing them in the library.

But Apple has finally listened to the users and added the filter to identify the album photos in the library, as described by Mark. Now we can have both - adding photos to several albums and hiding them in the library.

One of the things that is disruptive for folks who are long time computer users, and who are used to moving files around, is that in Photos images are not files. Rather, pictures you see on the screen result from combinations of files and database information, so the way that Photos handles images can be a bit disconcerting. As léonie says, we don't move pictures; albums and other views are just lists of images.

The filters have been designed as temporary filters to revert automatically, probably, because people tend to forget that filters are applied and wonder about missing photos.

Are you using iCloud Photos? Then there is another way: The iCloud Photos Library can be split into two separate compartments - a personal library and a Shared iCloud Photos Library and we can really move photos between these two separate compartments. I am moving my best photos, that I organized in into albums from my personal library to the Shared iCloud Photos Library and are leaving the cluttered mess that still needs organizing in the personal library.

Once we have set up the Shared iCloud PHotoslibrary there is a neat switch where we can toggle between the Personal Library, the Shared Library or viewing both libraries together. I like the Shared iCloud Photolibrary very much, but do not use it for sharing, but enjoy it for having two separate views of my iCloud Photolibrary on all devices, my iPad, iPhone, Macs and Vision Pro.

The photos we move between the shared library and the personal library will remain in the albums, but only for us. If we use the Shared iCloud Photolibrary for sharing photos with others, the other participants do not see our albums, only the shared photos.

A system upgrade may reset some of your Settings. And the "not in Album" Filter will be reset to "All Photos" after quitting the app. You will have to enable it again, when you are organizing your albums.

But albums should not disappear.

Albums should survive a system upgrade, unless they are albums synced from your computer, shown in the "From my Mac" section. Are you syncing your iPhone occasionally with a computer, manually over the air or with a USB connection?

By any chance, do you have Filter By: on the Mac's main Library page set to Not in an album?

That would intentionally cause them to be hidden from the main Library view. It seems that while Apple has never added true subdirectories / user-level folders to Photos, they have added a way to sort-of-simulaate that with this feature.

What level of iOS 26 are you running? 26.6 is the latest production version.

In recent releases of iOS 26, the user gets to control whether or not the Library view includes items that have been placed in Albums. The control is a Filter named "Not in an Album" located with the other Filter options.

First find the stack of three lines in a circle next to "Select" in the upper right corner of the Library screen.

Click on the stack of three lines in a circle to reveal the pull-down list.

Click on the "Filter >" item near the bottom of the pull-down list.

Click on "Not in an Album" to enable or disable displaying those items.

On a Mac you may want use a smart album:

• File > New smart album
• Set the rule to "Album > is not > any"

This should work in the most recent system versions. Which system version is running on your Mac?

The drop down filter "not in any album" should work in macOS26 Tahoe as well, if I remember correctly.

The same filter exists in Mac Photos, macOS 26.

Just use the funnel icon.

I tend to use Smart Albums as léonie suggests, since I can use "Album" controls, and I can sort without messing up my Library view…
