Won't charge after upgrade to 26.6.

I recently upgraded to iPad OS 26.6 and now it won't charge at all. I have tried everything suggested. The interesting thing is that while it was going through the factory reset process, it charged until it upgraded to 26.6 again. Now it won't charge again. I backed it up but am soon going to be completely unable to use it. Please help!

Several reports have been seen here concerning charging issues subsequent to updating to iPadOS 26.6.

Ensure that the charging cable connectors are properly seated in the iPad's charging port and the associated Power Adapter. If the charging cable won’t properly seat or easily fit into the charging port of the iPad, this might indicate that either dirt or lint is obstructing the plug, or the plug or charging socket have been damaged. A damaged charging cable must be replaced - whereas a damaged charging port must be repaired.

If the problem is due to a visible obstruction, you may be able to remove it yourself*. With good light, using a sharpened wooden matchstick or plastic toothpick, very gently try to dislodge a visible the obstruction from the socket. Be careful to avoid damaging the delicate electrical contacts within the socket. Note that a USB-C socket has an obvious "tongue" within the socket.

(*) Removal of an obstruction is often best entrusted to the technicians at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the appropriate tools and expertise are available:

If the charging problem is not mechanical, these support pages should help with troubleshooting battery and charging issues:

Troubleshooting generally requires substitution of the Power Adapter and cable for another known-good item. Most models of iPad require a Power Adapter rated at 12W (i.e., 2.4A @5V) or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters (1.0A @5V) intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow. Many recent models of iPad are supplied with an Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter.

Some third-party USB-C power adapters (and portable PowerBanks) may not support USB PD (Power Delivery). Power Delivery mutually negotiates the charging voltage; the source, load and cable are all elements involved in the negotiation protocol. Unless the Power Adapter explicitly supports USB PD, it will almost certainly fail to charge the iPad; proprietary charging standards, such as QC (Quick Charge), are not supported.

Many computer USB ports also cannot source sufficient power to charge an iPad. Unless explicitly designed for charging connected devices, computer USB ports are typically limited to 0.5-1A @5V (i.e., 2.5-5.0W).

If you continue to experience difficulties when using an appropriate Power Adapter of 12W or greater, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

I can’t charge it now. It simply shows the icon to plug it in and won’t boot even to the Apple logo. So yea, it’s toast. No matter how many chargers and cables I’ve tried, it will not charge, and thus not boot, and thus, it’s a brick.
I was a huge Apple fan. This is terrible.

Well, the iPad isn't dead. With benefit of this additional information, your iPad presumably indicates that it must be restored. If this occurred immediately subsequent to performing a system software update, the update process failed - the reason for which we are unlikely to be able to determine.

Start here:

If you see the Restore screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

These support pages outline the available methods to restore your iPad to Factory Settings:

You’ll need access to either a Windows PC (with iTunes for Windows installed, or more recent Apple Devices App) or a Mac computer (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of macOS).

Download and use iTunes for Windows – Apple Support

Use of a PC or Mac computer is unavoidable. If you don’t have access to a suitable computer of your own, that of a helpful friend or family member will suffice. Alternatively, the technicians at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) will be delighted to assist.

After the iPad has been successfully restored, you can restore your data and settings to your iPad:

The iPad's internal charge controller is, in part, software controlled.

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated or post-update software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

After the upgrade to 26.6.1, the ipad was usable. It wasn't until night when I plugged it in to charge. Next morning, the battery was at 10%, no charge at all. It gradually depleted through the day with my trying different blocks & cables to get it to recognize any charger. Even a USB-C from my MacBookPro didn't recognize.
There is no restore screen. It's the "Plug in to charge" black screen with a power cable and a battery listed. Plugging into my mac is useless as it's not recognized now. I can't restore. I can't charge. I've had other people try to charge it with their cables, nothing.
You can keep telling me it's not a dead ipad, but if it's not usable, and it won't boot even to the apple icon, it's useless.

Have you told Apple?

Apple’s formal support can be reached several ways

  • You can provide feedback to Apple at→ Product Feedback - Apple where your issue or suggestion will be recorded, tracked and matched with similar reports, but you will not get a reply

For personalized support

Best way:

  • Install the Apple Support app on your iPhone or iPad - you can contact support directly from the app, and the tech will have (with your permission) access to diagnostic data on your device

Other options:

(Note that both of the above have options to receive a callback or chat)

I bought a usb based voltmeter; I used the same block / cable to charge a USB flood light. Then moved over to my ipad. The USB-C port can't be bad, because I immediately saw it start consuming .51 amps. It would draw down (charge) for 30 seconds, then shut the charge off. I can unplug, and replug the ipad in, and it'll restart to charge, for 30 seconds, then shut it down again.

.5 amps is not sufficient to charge an iPad. It needs at least 2 amps.

If you don't see the charging icons

  1. Connect your iPad to a USB charging cable (preferably the cable that came with your iPad).
  2. Plug the cable into one of these power sources:

    • A USB power adapter that’s plugged into a working power source. It's best to use the USB power adapter that came with your iPad. Learn more about Apple USB power adapters.
    • A USB port that supports USB 2 or later, on a computer that’s on and not in sleep mode
    • A powered USB hub, docking station, or other Apple-certified accessory
    • A compatible Magic Keyboard that is connected to a working power source

If your iPad still won’t charge

Force your iPad to restart

If your iPad still won't charge, force it to restart.

For an iPad without a Home button

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button until your iPad restarts.

For an iPad with a Home button

Press and hold both the top (or side) button and the Home button until you see the Apple logo.

26.6.1 bricked my ipad. Charged before the upgrade, won't after. I've tried 5 different wall bricks, my MBP, and at least 4 different cables, all that still work on other devices.

If your iPad still operates, then it hasn't been "bricked" by the iPadOS 26.6.1 update. This phrase implies that the iPad is totally unresponsive and will not restart to a running state - which, by your narrative, is not the case.

If, having updated your iPad, you are unable to charge using a USB-C Power Adapter that supports USB PD (Power Delivery), recovery instructions have already been provided within my earlier replies to this thread.

Additionally, you should be able to successfully charge your iPad using a conventional USB Power Adapter - that features a basic USB Type-A connection - rated at 12W or greater. This type of Power Adapter does not employ USB PD and will supply only 5V to the iPad.

What have you to lose in updating to the most recent version of iOS/iPadOS for your iPhone/iPad? The update may resolve your issue - and may save you an unnecessary trip to the Genius Bar.

Should you visit the Genius Bar, the very first thing the Apple Technicians will do will be to perform the update.

My Iphone 15 Pro Max stopped charging properly after 26.6.1 too. It keeps dropping in battery health whilst charging, and randomly connects, disconnects and connects,... again and again every few seconds. Never had this issue before the update

That’s coincidence; if it were a problem with the release you would see thousands of posts about it.

This is a problem with your iPhone, not the version you installed.

Have you tried any troubleshooting:

Go to Settings/Battery/battery health and read the health message, and not the maximum capacity. If either the message says there is a problem or of the max capacity is 80% or lower you need a new battery: iPhone Battery Replacement - Official Apple Support

Have you tried a different power source and a different cable?

Does the problem happen when charging wirelessly?
