2020 MacBook Air M1 display shows a black vertical bar and ghost image

I have a 2-inch black vertical bar on my Laptop. Between the various forums, there are all kinds of posts with this issue. I see a ghost image of a page that was up previously. I purchased Apple Care for this computer when I bought it, but it has since expired. I did not renew it on my Laptop as It does not get used much and never leaves the house.

I started buying Apple products years ago when I got into the music business. I really like the stuff as it was a step ahead of the PC market. This is my second Apple Laptop that has had a serious issue. If I mirror it to my TV, the picture is perfect. Depending on what this will cost me, I might just get a PC. I miss Vegas and some of the PC applications. I can always go to the Genius Bar and get talked down to again.

Welcome and thank you for reaching out. 🤗

I am sorry to read about your experience with a particular individual regarding prior service.

That is not the expectation that you deserve.

I recommend speaking with the store manager directly regarding that situation.

As for your situation, there appears to be a problem with the internal panel. Only a certified Apple technician can determine the cause and offer a complete solution.

Therefore, I recommend service.

Thanks: I can use the Mirror function and send it to my 48-inch TV, and the picture is perfect. I tried another administrator, and the problem still exists

You are welcome.

Excellent job troubleshooting this!

So, from what you’ve provided, this is a hardware issue.

Fixing This:

So, get this serviced, or, consider updating to another Mac, performing a data migration. Note that, if this is an Intel Mac, that 2021 and after Mac models are all of Silicon processor-series. So, while some software may not work, others won’t: Transfer to a New Mac with Migration Assistant - Apple Support

Getting this Serviced:

A. Apple Stores:

Set up a Genius Bar Appointment at your local Apple Store. If an earlier model, this may not be an option. So, you'd have to take this to your local AASP. See (B.) below.

also...

B. Contact an AASP:

Another option might be to contact an AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider). See what services that offer for this.

  1. Go Here: Find Locations - Apple Authorized Reseller
  2. Click: Service & Support
  3. Enter: your location information
  4. See: if there is an AASP nearby
  5. Contact: an AASP that shows up, and find out more about the services that they offer to fix the Mac

Vertical Line:

A. Single-Out this User:

Create a new Administrator user on your computer, seeing if you get the same error. If so, then it is a system-wide issue. If not, then it is an issue pertaining to your current user.

B. Connect an External Screen:

Have an external screen? If so, connect to it using a cable. This. would be the adapter to use, as you'll have a female USB-C port so that one it not lost: USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter - Apple

If this issue is not seen, then it is an issue with your Mac, and not the macOS. If seen, on the otherhand, then is is an issue with the entire macOS, in which case a reinstall may have to take place.

C. Showing this to Apple:

Wile on the iPhone with an Apple Rep, you can show this to them for ease of troubleshooting, and to prove your point. This will show this issue to the Apple Rep from YOUR persecutive. You'd hover your iPhone over you Mac's screen > screenshare the iPhone with the Apple Rep > open the Camera app > and turn on speakerphone. I apologise for being a moron, but when I spoke to the 2nd-tier support specialist on the phone and they told me the repair price was more than I paid for the laptop, it really upset me. I had to replace a previous laptop and an iPhone before I should have. I still have an iMac that works perfectly. They are just not making things like I used to. I have worked on many computers, but this one is a no-go for sure. I went out and bought the pentelope P5 and took the bottom off. I did not even recognise anything, lol. For now, I can mirror it to my 48-inch screen, and it actually looks great. Someone suggested resetting the SMC and the NVRAM but that did nothing. There are a lot of people with the same issue. I guess I have to buy the protection on everything everytime now. Do you know of any reputable/Reliable mac resellars where I could get a MacBook Air. Thanks again for your help

Every computer has issues.

Switching brands doesn’t matter because there will always be some problems.

Just take a look at Microsoft Support and see for yourself.

Personally, I always add AppleCare and have enjoyed completely different experiences over the years.

I have no experience with third party reputable resellers. Perhaps someone else can chime in.
