Magic Keyboard trackpad not working with iPad Air 5th generation

magic keyboard trackpad for ipad air 5th generation - iOS 27.0

The keyboard is working but not the trackpad. I have followed these steps with no success:

  • Power Reset: Unplug any USB-C charging cable from the keyboard, remove your iPad, wait a few seconds, and snap the iPad back onto the magnetic connector.
  • Force Restart: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top power button until the Apple logo appears.
  • Check Tap to Click: Go to Settings > General > Trackpad and verify if Tap to Click is turned off; if it is, you must physically press down on the trackpad until you feel a click to select items. Here my general does not show Trackpad.
  • Toggle AssistiveTouch: Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch, turn it on briefly, and then turn it off again to reset external pointer inputs.
  • Clean Smart Connectors

Anyone can help?

When the Magic Keyboard's keys function but the trackpad fails and the Trackpad menu is completely missing from Settings > General, the iPadOS is failing to recognize the trackpad hardware through the Smart Connector. Since basic resets did not work, use these advanced steps to force recognition.

  • Reset All Settings: Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings. This clears corrupted system preferences without deleting personal data, often restoring missing external hardware menus.
  • Connect a Bluetooth Trackpad or Mouse: Pair a separate wireless mouse or trackpad to the iPad, use it briefly, disconnect it, and reattach the Magic Keyboard to re-handshake external pointer drivers.
  • Inspect Smart Connector Pins: Look closely at the three gold pins on the iPad's back and the matching pads on the keyboard. A single obstructed or slightly recessed pin allows keyboard data through while blocking the separate USB/trackpad data lanes.
  • Test on Another iPad: Mount the iPad Air on a different compatible Magic Keyboard or test the keyboard on another compatible iPad to isolate whether the failure is in the iPad's logic board data pins or the keyboard's internal hardware.

If the Trackpad menu still does not appear after resetting all settings, let us know if the iPad was recently exposed to moisture or dropped, then the keyboard is in need of hardware service
