The past few days I have consulted some Experts on software for Apple and together with my own Experience and Considerations this is the present status of my Problem:
I am experiencing persistent and severe synchronization problems between Apple Mail and one specific Gmail account since updating my iMac to macOS Tahoe 26.6.2. The problem does not occur with my other Gmail account.
The affected Gmail account works perfectly when accessed directly through Gmail Web. However, synchronization through Apple Mail is extremely slow and frequently gets stuck.
The same problem also occurs with this Gmail account on my iPhone and iPad. This makes me suspect a problem with the interaction between Apple Mail and this particular Gmail account, possibly related to macOS/iOS rather than a problem with Gmail itself.
Symptoms:
- The green synchronization/status indicator in Apple Mail remains inactive for a very long time.
- Eventually it becomes green, but synchronization can take several minutes.
- New messages are retrieved very slowly.
- Moving messages from Gmail to a local mailbox is extremely slow and frequently gets stuck.
- Deleting messages from Gmail after moving them to a local mailbox is also very slow or fails to complete.
- At times synchronization stops altogether and I have to use Gmail Web instead.
- Gmail Web itself continues to work normally.
Troubleshooting already performed:
- Restarted the iMac, iPhone and iPad.
- Disabled and re-enabled synchronization.
- Removed the Gmail account from Apple Mail and added it again using Google's official account setup.
- Deleted the relevant Apple Mail Envelope/index files from the Library so that the Mail database could be rebuilt.
- Checked Keychain Access for abnormal or duplicate credentials.
- Repeated the account setup process.
- Verified that the Gmail account itself works normally through Gmail Web.
- Despite contradiction in the advice, I moved all folders from Icloud to mymac.
None of these actions has solved the problem.
An important observation is that another Gmail account on the same iMac, using the same Apple Mail application and the same macOS installation, synchronizes normally.
The problem therefore appears to be specific to the interaction between Apple Mail and this particular Gmail account. However, because the problem started after the update to macOS Tahoe 26.6.2, I suspect that this could be a regression or synchronization bug in Apple Mail.
I hope that there is somebody in the Community who can help me further or maybe Apple could investigate whether there are known problems with Gmail/IMAP synchronization in macOS Tahoe 26.6.2, particularly concerning opening, moving messages between Gmail and local mailboxes and deleting messages from the Gmail server?
