Subject: Error "No packages were found" when reinstalling OS X on MacBook Air (2013)
Hello everyone. I am trying to factory reset a MacBook Air (2013) that belonged to a family member, but I don't remember the password, and the internal hard drive is completely wiped out (it originally showed the folder with a question mark icon).
Here are the exact steps I've taken so far:
* Internet Recovery: I turned off the Mac completely and used the key combination Shift + Option (Alt) + Command (⌘) + R upon startup. The Mac successfully connected to Wi-Fi, downloaded, and launched the recovery tools via internet.
* The Issue: Once inside the OS installer, when trying to proceed with the installation on the wiped drive, the following error pops up on the screen: "No packages were found for installation. Please contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
* Previous Attempts: I also tried booting with just Command + R, but it yields the same block. I do not have access to another computer or a USB flash drive to create a bootable installer, so I need to fix this directly from the Mac.
How can I bypass or fix this package error (perhaps by adjusting the date via Terminal or another method) to successfully complete the factory installation on this model?
I am attaching a picture of the exact error screen I am getting. Thanks in advance for any help!

Try booting into Internet Recovery Mode using Command + Option + R to attempt to access the online macOS 11.x Big Sur installer. Unfortunately some Macs may only boot to the online installer for the older version of macOS which originally shipped with the computer from the factory.

If you still can only boot into the older macOS Mountain Lion or Mavericks online installer, then you can try changing the system date & time using the Terminal application which can be accessed by clicking the "Utilities" menu on the menubar. Use the following command to set the date & time to Jan. 2, 2017 at 11:33am:

date -u 0102113317

Otherwise you will need access to another working Mac from 2007 to mid-2021 in order to create a bootable macOS USB installer.

Generally you need these Mac models for each specific version of macOS (these versions of macOS are all compatible with your MBAir 2013 model):

    • macOS 11.x Big Sur -- 2013 to mid-2021
    • macOS 10.15 Catalina -- 2012 to mid-2020
    • macOS 10.13 High Sierra -- Late-2009 to mid-2018
    • macOS 10.11 El Capitan -- 2007 to 2015

You can confirm whether a particular model is compatible with each OS by using the following article as a guide:

You can download various macOS installers using the information in the following Apple article:

Read that last Apple article very carefully, especially for the macOS 10.11 installer since there are multiple steps required to extract the actual El Capitan installer from the downloaded DMG file.
