I have the appearance setting on automatic but it doesn't always change at the appropriate times . I'm constantly going back to the settings to make it light during the daytime because it's still on dark from the night before ?

Maybe you want to set up a “Custom” schedule so you can actually define when your device turns Dark Mode on and off. That way you don’t have to wait for the OS to decide for you.
