"you don't have permission to see its contents"

Upon realizing that a folder of images was missing from the desktop of my new iMac, I did a Spotlight search and turned up nothing.

I went to the backups in my Time Capsule and downloaded the Desktop Folder for Aug 15, a date which I knew to be when I last saw the aforementioned image folder.

After download was complete, the Desktop Folder appeared with a red dot with white dash, and a message "you don't have permission to see its contents" I entered my password after selecting Get Info, and that still won't allow me to see the contents. How do I resolve this? TIA

27" iMac i7, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

How did you do that? Via the "Star Wars" display? If not, try doing it that way, per #15 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

I'm going to give up on that folder if it's alright. It's taken on a life of its own, too much trouble for what it contained.

Try one more thing. I'm not sure whether the contents of the folder got downloaded or not, but go back to the folder you downloaded, with the permissions problem, and do +Get Info.+

Click the padlock at the bottom right, and enter your Admin password like you did before.

Then click the plus sign at the lower left, and select the desired user account from the list. That should give it Read rights to the folder. Click the arrows in front of the words +Read Only+ and select +Read & Write.+

Then click the "gear" icon at the bottom, and select "Apply to enclosed items."

If the contents did get downloaded, now you should be able to see them, and copy them wherever you want.

Know what! I'd put that folder in the trash, thinking it was futile to work with. I just dragged it back to the desktop, got a message requiring me to enter a password (the username cited was MBP) and upon entering the password, the red dot disappeared and all contents were visible! How'd it do that? Well, who's asking, just be glad it did.

Big thanks!

You're very welcome. Glad it's sorted out (however it happened).

Wish I'd found you last year when my HD on a MacBook totalled out; they had me at the 2nd level support for Time Capsule and they couldn't do anything to recover my data. I had to settle for a free replacement of the hard drive, and kiss my stuff good bye.

That's one of the reasons why I always recommend "secondary" backups -- all hardware fails, sooner or later, and no backup app is perfect, either. See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for some suggestions.

Hey. I just read this thread and got a question about the migrating assistant. It kinda seems like that assistant overides the permissions and passwords, or am I wrong?

I mean if you migrate from a time capsule backup with multiple users (from different macs) with the migrating assistant, couldn't you easily get a hold of all the backups of the other users like that?
