why do folders I open then disappear from the desktop after a while without me having closed them?

why do some of my folders just disappear after opening them? I open a specific folder but after half hour if I look for it on the desktop, it's not there anymore, so I have to open it again. I never figured this out and it's been years, it drives me crazy and I find myself opening the same stupid folders multiple times a day

I have never heard of such behavior, something is certainly wrong.

I am guessing that there is something installed, maybe something quite old that was unknowingly carried along to your current system (you mention that this issue has been plaguing you for years), that is causing this. One good way to figure this out is to download the (free) diagnostic tool Etrecheck and run it, and to then post its report here for scores of other readers to review and look for the cause.

Note that there is a free version of Etrecheck and that minimal version will work for this. I and others have paid for the more capable version because we have found this tool useful and want to support its developer (who participates in the Apple Discussion forums as well).
