I'm really not impressed with the latest generation MacBook screen design. They are way too fragile. Until my 14-inch M1, I've never had a screen go out on any laptop that I've owned and they have not babied (neither have they been abused). Mine is now effectively a desktop and I won't be touching another one of these without AppleCare+.
I also get AppleCare+ for laptops, iPhones, iMacs. But I think it might be cheaper to go without it. I have never made a claim on any of the many Macs we have owned, but in my family there have been two iPhone claims and one AppleTV claim; those all resulted in new devices being provided to replace the faulty ones.
Note that AppleCare+ is $110-$160 per year for MacBook Pros. So that can approach $1000 over 6 years, the age of your laptop. There is also a $100 deductible for screen repair. So simply paying for the screen repair without the extended warranty might end up being cheaper for the customer.
I agree that the newer screens may be more fragile. I have 2010 and 2013 MacBook Airs that are still working, screens and all are fine. And they went through major handling/treatment having been used by a college student, who knows what she did to them (she also put a big dent in the lid of a newer MacBook Pro she uses but it also works fine), but they are still working fine. The newer screens are much higher resolution and the new laptops have been reengineered to be very compact and lightweight. Perhaps this makes them more fragile.
