Pages (v.15.3.1) TOC item must start on a new page? Even if I haven't formatted it to start on a new page? Is it possible to have subheads show in a TOC and remain mid-page, or wherever they fall within the text? Doesn't seem so, but just checking with the experts.

No — a paragraph doesn’t have to start on a new page just because its style is included in the TOC.
Pages builds the TOC from paragraph styles, so a Heading 2 or other subhead can stay exactly where it falls in the text and still appear in the TOC.
If applying that style is forcing the subhead onto a new page, I’d check whether there’s a section break at that point. In Pages, a new section always starts on a new page.
So the TOC itself shouldn’t be causing the page break.

Thank you, Pre. Nope, I can't get the subheads to stay mid-page if they're marked for TOC. I don't have section breaks. They are correct in Pages. But start new pages as epubs in Books.app. I think I've check everything. (I've also tried unchecking Keep w Next ¶. Same problem.) Any other ideas?
Anybody else have a suggestion for why marking a subhead for TOC makes the subhead move to a new page in the doc? I do not have section breaks. I hate to give up by removing them from the TOC.
