Why does Apple's Airpod pro replacement plan set conditions that customers cannot meet?

I knew that reaching out to applecare was likely to cause more frustration than it resolved, but I got irritated enough to try anyway (every 3-7 days airpods would just refuse to connect to my phone until I restarted the phone). They never told me once I was getting new pods and a case. The pods came, I sent the old ones back. Thought I was done. Then about 9 days later, oh here is a case too. Did not provide any instructions or QR for how to pare just a case; had to call again. But then it got even worse. Went to take the case to fedex only to learn they couldn't take it; I had to go to a special FedEx Express. Of course they were not open on the weekend so great, I get to lose work time on this too. I went to the second one, only to learn that they also could not take it and that I needed to go to a third FedEx Ground. When I got there and through the security gate that did not at all seem like it was for customers I was finally able to send it back.

Oh what's this email? Wonderful! it's a notice from apple telling me I have 4 days to get them the originals back before they charge me. Oh and the first shipment, the airpods, fedex misrouted them. Instead of OR to CA, it went OR to NJ. So now, despite jumping through endless hoops and driving to all of the fedex's in my zipcode, I still through no fault whatsoever of my own, will not get them these replacements back in time.

Does apple just really hate their customers this much? Why do they insist on a replacement policy that causes this much stress? Where I have no means whatsoever to get them the parts in the time frame they demanded? I feel like I am being stolen from and all it cost me was $69.99 for this useless applecare.

Since you already handed the original parts to FedEx, I’d keep the drop-off receipts and tracking numbers. Apple’s Express Replacement terms say the original product has to be returned within 10 business days, and Apple specifically recommends keeping proof that you returned it.

If FedEx has misrouted the package, I’d contact Apple Support again now and give them the repair number and tracking numbers. Ask them to document that the returns were handed to the specified carrier on time and that the delay is with FedEx.

I wouldn’t just wait for the deadline if Apple is already warning about a charge. The tracking history and your receipts are the important part here.

Solid advice (I have done those things but still, solid advice). I wish I had thought of this when I was on the phone with them... Why couldn't they request a new hold and cancel the previous one?

It makes me insane that Apple feels like they are the only ones that get security in these exchanges. I mean 'security' in the legal sense, their hold on my $277 is security compelling my performance of the agreement. I feel that the parties should be equally protected here, but putting that aside, they could have heard that there conditions and performance made it impossible for me to meet the timelines. They could have then requested a new hold. It seems to me as simple as setting the first one up. Plug in the details, send me the link. That way Apple still has their security, but then I would not be subject to performance conditions on my end (getting it back to them in 10 days) that was made impossible for me to meet by Apple and Fedex errors.

Their errors should not be my problem. When I raised that with the support agent, you would have thought I had spoken to them in a foreign language. It was beyond obvious that accepting responsibility for error and then doing literally anything whatsoever to address that was entirely alien to them. Like I was a fool for even suggesting that it should matter that Apple set up a procedure and then flubbed it hard.
