An iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, or iPhone SE 1 isn't capable of 16 or above; they require an A11 or better CPU.

Open Settings ➢ General ➢ Software Update.

If you get the message; "iOS is up to date", then your iPhone has reached the end-of-life support for Software Updates to the latest iOS operating system, depriving you of new features created many years ago.

Many modern apps are not compatible, limiting the usability of your device.

That is correct. The iPhone 7, which ran iOS 10 when Apple released it in September 2016 (nearly ten years ago), isn't compatible with iOS 16 and higher. If you need something more up-to-date than iOS 15, it's time to buy a new iPhone.

Note that when the App Store tells you that you must update to, say, iOS 16.3 or later in order to download an app, the message is only telling you about the app's requirements. If you are on an iPhone 7 and you get that message, what it really means is that you cannot download the app unless you get a new phone.

Software Update, on the other hand, will tell you that iOS is up to date when your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS that is currently available for it.

You are correct.

The reason.....the iPhone 7 is not compatible with iOS 16. You would need to have an iPhone 8 to download iOS 16.

iOS 16.3 is not available for any iPhone today. Even if one had an iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X, Software Update would only offer a later release of iOS 16.

Presumably the16.3 is from some app’s requirement for iOS 16.3 or later.
