Delete Apple Maps and its data on MacOS

Can’t be done.

• You can't use the Finder to delete apps that are required by your Mac. This includes many apps that are installed by macOS, such as Mail, Music, Books, Notes, Podcasts, Maps, News, and Stocks, as well as any apps in the System folder, which is reserved by macOS.

It does not matter the reason, you can't delete Maps from the Mac or any of the other apps installed with Mac OS on the sealed, read only partition of your hard drive. You also have the Chess app and it cannot be deleted either, whether you like to play Chess or not.

Of course, you don't have to use it either.

I'm the person who mentioned that as a possible reason for your upset. It is the reason most people have been having issues with Maps in the last week or so.

Even if that was not your concern, it doesn't change the answer: you can't remove Maps from your Mac. Your decision about whether or not to stop using Apple products is of no concern to anyone here. Always buy the tool that best meets your needs.

As stated, you cannot. Period, full stop. You cannot 'abandon Apple on all your devices' since those devices, whether Macs, iPhones or iPads can only run on an operating system designed by Apple, and those all include Maps. To 'escape' your only option is to switch to non-Apple devices. Hope you enjoy Windows and Android.

Your reason for wanting to remove Maps on the Mac makes no difference, the answer is still the same.

You will need to abandon Apple on all your devices. No apps installed with Mac OS can be removed as they are locked on a sealed, read only portion of your Hard Drive along with the OS to prevent tampering.

You can delete Apple Maps from an iPad or iPhone, but not from a Mac. But then what will you use for mapping? Google? certainly not. Microsoft? No.

It’s interesting that you are really concerned about the name of a lake, and not about many more significant problems in the US at this time. But that was probably why it was changed, to distract attention from other concerns. And it appears to be working.

Well if you abandon your Apple devices where will you go? Windows and Android (Google) use the same map location naming source as Apple, namely the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) as part of the USGS.

Actually, you can remove iMap from your iPhone & iPad. I just did this. MapQuest is good.

An alternative is Mapquest.
