Is there a way to trigger the "import CD" and "replace existing" actions in iTunes when trying to replace mp3 songs with better quality rips?

Is there a way to trigger the "import CD" and "replace existing" actions in iTunes when trying to replace mp3 songs with better quality rips? When I re-rip CD's with higher quality, iTunes impressed me by

keeping the metadata and date added
keeping the comments
keeping the embedded artwork (this I was least expecting)

I cannot find a way to trigger the same process with mp3 songs ripped from another program (because iTunes doesn't do a clean enough job on certain CD's).

The closest I can get is to close iTunes, replace the mp3's in the iTunes folder and reopen iTunes which

keeps the metadata and date added
overwrites the comments with what was in the newly ripped mp3
does not re-embed artwork like the CD import seemingly does

It's not that difficult to restore comments or artwork manually, but requires some pre-work before replacing the files. If there is a way to trigger this magical CD import process with mp3's, then I would love to hear it.mport

While I consider myself to be very experienced with iTunes, I'm not an "authority" on it; in other words, I don't work for Apple, so my advice below is based on my extensive experience with iTunes over many years.

I suspect that the only method would be to copy the embedded artwork from the existing mp3 before you replace it and then use iTunes (not Windows Explorer) to paste it into the replaced version.

I believe this is because when you use Windows Explorer to replace the mp3 in the folder, nothing specifically happens within iTunes (even if it is running) and therefore iTunes does not "know" that the file has been changed. But when you select the track in iTunes to play it or add it to a portable device, iTunes looks for and uses the copy that is in the folder, hence it uses the improved quality replacement version, which has no artwork.

The difference between the mp3 and a CD in this respect is that when importing a CD (at better quality) iTunes is managing the complete process and so it can effectively ensure that it uses the same artwork for the replacement version. I speak from experience, I have re-imported from CDs in many cases.
