iPad Pro apps close to Home Screen with JetsamEvent logs after clean setup

I’m hoping someone in the community might have some ideas because I’ve been troubleshooting this for a few weeks with both Apple and Procreate support and I’m still having the same problem.

I have an iPad Pro 13-inch (M5) 256 GB Model MDYJ4LL/A. Purchased new October 2025. It's worked great until the beginning of August, when apps started unexpectedly closing and sending me back to the Home Screen. This is not limited to one app. It has happened repeatedly with Procreate, but I have also had it happen while using Skillshare, Match Factory, and Safari.

When it happens, the app simply disappears and I’m returned to the Home Screen. The iPad does not show the Apple logo and does not appear to do a complete reboot.

Here is everything I have tried so far:

• Restarted the iPad multiple times.

• Made sure iPadOS was updated.

• Went to the Apple Store/Genius Bar and had the iPad reset.

• Restored the iPad from iCloud afterward, but the crashes continued.

• Contacted Apple Support and worked with a senior advisor.

• Apple ran remote diagnostics on the iPad twice. I was told they did not find a stability or hardware issue.

• Checked Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Analytics Data. There have been multiple JetsamEvent logs as well as other analytics logs.

• Contacted Procreate support and provided diagnostic information/logs to them.

• Because the problem continued, I decided to eliminate my backup as a possible cause.

Today, September 5, I moved all of my Procreate artwork off the iPad and into Dropbox. I then completely erased the iPad again using Erase All Content and Settings.

This time I set it up as a brand-new iPad. I did NOT restore an iCloud backup or a backup from my Mac.

After the clean setup, I installed only Procreate and Dropbox besides the regular apps that come with an ipad.

I intentionally did not reinstall all of my other apps because I wanted to test the iPad in as clean a state as possible.

I brought over 2 procreate files from dropbox.

Within approximately five minutes of using Procreate, it happened again.

Procreate suddenly closed and I was sent back to the Home Screen. There was no Apple logo and the iPad did not appear to reboot. This time, however, the Home Screen was Dark instead of showing my wallpaper. It stayed that way until I locked the iPad and unlocked it again.

I immediately checked Analytics Data and there are two new JetsamEvent entries from today after the clean setup.

At this point the problem has occurred:

• Before an Apple Store reset

• After the Apple Store reset

• After restoring from my backup

• In multiple apps

• After a complete erase

• After setting the iPad up as new with no backup restored

• With essentially nothing installed except Procreate and Dropbox

The most concerning part to me is that I was able to reproduce the problem within about five minutes on a freshly erased iPad that was set up as new.

Has anyone experienced something similar, particularly repeated JetsamEvent logs or apps being terminated on an iPad that has already been completely erased and set up as new?

Could this still be a software/iPadOS issue, or does reproducing it after a clean setup point more toward a hardware or memory problem that Apple’s diagnostics might not be detecting?

I’m happy to provide information from the JetsamEvent logs if there are particular fields I should look for.

Thanks for any ideas. I feel like I’ve eliminated most of the usual troubleshooting suggestions at this point.

Hi LotusPilot,

Thank you for the response and the additional link. Unfortunately, I have already completed all of these troubleshooting steps, including working directly with Apple Support and visiting the Apple Store.

The iPad is running the most current version of iPadOS. I have performed forced restarts, reset settings, and the iPad has already been completely erased and factory reset. I have also set it up again as new rather than restoring from an iCloud backup.

The problem has continued despite all of this.

I also reviewed the Apple Support article you linked regarding an app closing unexpectedly. Initially I suspected Procreate because that is where I noticed the issue most often, and I have already been working with Procreate Support as well.

However, I no longer believe this can be treated simply as an individual app crashing.

As another person here suggested, I deleted Procreate completely and left it off the iPad to see what would happen. The iPad initially seemed stable without it. I reinstalled Procreate today and the problem happened again before I had even opened the app.

I then deleted Procreate again. Approximately five minutes later, with Procreate no longer installed on the iPad, it happened again while I was simply on the Home Screen moving icons around.

It has also happened while using Safari and YouTube.

I have multiple JetsamEvent logs from days when these incidents occurred, and Apple Support has already been involved in troubleshooting the issue.

At this point I am specifically trying to determine what could cause the iPad to repeatedly return to the Home Screen even after a clean factory reset and when Procreate is not installed at all.

I would really appreciate any ideas beyond restarting, resetting, reinstalling apps or performing another factory restore, since those steps have already been completed and the problem is still occurring.

Thank you for your help!

Ensure that you have updated your iPad to the most recent version of iPadOS. For iPad models capable of running iPadOS 26, iPadOS 26.6.1 is current.

If your iPad is still not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated or post-update software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings. This process will fully reset the iPad and reinstall a fresh copy of the most recent supported version of iPadOS:

Your backup can be restored to the iPad at the conclusion of the process - although as a diagnostic exercise, you might first set-up again "as new" with your Apple Account without restoring your backup - install Procreate - and re-evaluate stability.

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad - and you can explore your available options:

Hello and thank you for your response. I tried your suggestion and deleted Procreate last night. After deleting it, the iPad did not crash again for the rest of the evening, so I thought we might finally be onto something.

This morning I reinstalled Procreate to test it again. I did not even open Procreate, but the iPad kicked me back to the Home Screen again. I then deleted Procreate again, and about five minutes later it happened once more.

The second time, Procreate was no longer installed. I had only been using Safari and YouTube, and I was actually on the Home Screen moving icons around when it happened.

I really appreciate the suggestion because removing Procreate was a very useful test, even though the problem has now occurred without it installed. And I'm not sure where to go from here.

Edit to add: I purchased the ipad for Procreate drawing.

Thank you.

Christine
