Safari crashing immediately after Tahoe upgrade

I have just upgraded to Tahoe on my MacMini M1 2020 and Safari won't open; crashes after about half a second. Fortunately I have Chrome so can function. However I want to continue using Safari. I have tried the various restart options to no avail. Most of the suggestions say to "Open Safari" and check various things; this isn't possible as it won't stay open. Judging from the number of problems that this upgrade seems to have caused I would hope for a bug-fix upgrade. Any advice?

Mac mini, macOS 26.6

Safari may be crashing when attempting to open one or more previously opened websites. If you press and hold a Shift key when launching Safari from Applications or the Dock, it will open Safari to your chosen selection in its "New windows open with" setting: Change General settings in Safari on Mac - Apple Support.

Release the Shift key when Safari opens, or crashes again. If it crashes, the next step would be to boot "Safe Mode" and determine if you can launch Safari while in that mode:

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

If you successfully open Safari you can then follow the suggestions you may have found, which are likely to include:

Clear your browsing history in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

Clear your cache and cookies in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

For general reference: If Safari doesn't work as expected on Mac - Apple Support
