Pro Pencil no longer functioning?

My pro pencil is 100% charged. It isn’t working anymore. I have unpaired and repaired it. Unscrewed and reattached the tip. No success.

Inconsistent drawing will either be due to a problem with the Pencil itself, or its interaction with the iPad screen.

Ensure that the user-replaceable Pencil tip is snugly screwed into the body of the Apple Pencil; when fitted correctly you should see a tiny gap, of about the thickness of a sheet of paper, between the tip and pencil body. If slightly loosened, or overtightened, the Pencil may not work properly, if at all.

A potential source of failure is the transducer element (that sits immediately under the replaceable tip) - which may have suffered damage from an impact (such as being dropped onto its tip), or application of excessive lateral pressure.

If the metal transducer element is intact, you can try replacing the tip - ensuring that the replacement is screwed snugly into position. If replacing the pencil tip does not resolve this issue, or the tip is not correctly positioned in relation to the pencil body when fitted, then your Pencil may have suffered irreparable damage.

You might be best advised to visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad and Apple Pencil. Here you will be in the best possible place to explore your available options:

Before giving up on your pencil, please try this

Perform a Force Restart on Your iPad

A standard restart might not clear out frozen background processes responsible for handling the Apple Pencil's digitizer communication. A force restart completely reloads the code.

  • Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  • Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  • Press and hold the Power/Top button. Keep holding it past the "Slide to power off" screen until you see the Apple logo, then let go.
