Cannot connect to server after OS27 upgrade due to unsupported AFP URLs

After upgrading to OS27 yesterday I can no longer connect to our server.

I get the following message

"There is a problem connecting to the server.

ULR's with the type "afp:" are not supported."

Mac Studio, macOS 27.0

Correct. The Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) has been fully deprecated and it is not supported by macOS Golden Gate. AFP was actually fully deprecated in Sequoia, client-side support was not dropped from macOS until now, with Golden Gate.

All server connections must now be handled by SMB, which has been the industry standard for many years.

Sorry, but your server admin should have migrated a long time ago. AFP on the server side was eliminated with Big Sur, 6 years ago.

See this, for example:

Thanks for the history. Unfortunately I was not using AFP in 2013 so it was not relevant to me. I do not subscribe to other Mac blogs so I have never seen the discussions you mention. What I am referring to is communication by Apple to its user base. Not everyone is a tech guru or involved in Mac blogs/discussion groups. I just find it astonishing that a brand like Apple would remove support for its own legacy protocol without a communications plan to ensure no one gets impacted by the change.

I understand what you are saying and your frustration but a key/basic rule of using technology is that before upgrading or changing systems a check should be performed to ensure your desired or current tools/systems will continue working after the upgrade. Sorry that the upgrade caused issues for you but users, not Apple, should confirm that their systems will continue working if they apply an upgrade.

Had I known or been informed by Apple were removing support … In other words, communication……..

Just so you know, Apple will be removing the framework for native playback of DVDs in a future version of macOS. It’s already been removed on the software development side, meaning it’s likely that macOS 28 (due out in the fall of 2027) will eliminate the DVD Player app and not support native playback of DVDs.

TAKE NOTE, you have been warned… 😜

Really Bob? It is not about AFP being removed, this is about the entire Apple user experience. The vast majority of Mac users are not technically astute, they are everyday people who purchased an easier to use computer than those offered by manufacturers using Microsoft OS. Personally, after 35 years with Microsoft OS I switched to Mac because it was so much simpler to maintain. It just worked, and worked well. I would be having this same conversation with Microsoft if they had removed support for a fundamental data transport protocol. Yes HW and Its associated SW gets deprecated, that is usually progress - a good thing! My overarching concern is for other Mac users who were caught unaware the same way I was. My objection is simply that a change of this magnitude should have been better communicated in a “Read me First” notice. That is what I would have expected from Apple.

I cut my teeth on IBM mainframes, Unix mini’s and IBM PC’s. My first ever computer was a preproduction IBM XT from IBM’s labs. I have over 50 years working with computers and as such know full well the value of clear and concise communication.

I think that gives me some credence when I write about support issues.
