iPad 9th gen not charging after iOS 27 update.

After updating 9th gen iPad to iOS 27 it will not charge.

It had gone totally flat.

I’ve done numerous hard resets, using original charger and cable that has been tested and working.

Battery icon shows on screen with one red line, and it shows the charge cable has been plugged in.

I had the same issue, with the battery icon and single red bar, when I updated to iOS27 on my Gen 9. I was able to fix the issue, by using the Apple 20W charger in a wall socket. I plugged the Ipad in to the charger and left it alone. I did not try to reset it, start it, or anything else. I just left it alone. After about a day and a half on the charger, I pushed the power button to check it and I had 93 percent battery. It took that long for the battery and whatever else was going on to wake up. I kept it on the charger and got it to 100%. Ipad is working fine now, charging and staying charged. When I got it working, there was an update to iOS27 to fix bug issues. So Apple must be aware of it needing to be fixed.

Was this fixed with 27.0.1? I have 15 iPads that are dead and more that will die, and I need to know if the update will fix this

There have now been many reports of charging issues with iPad9 subsequent to updating to iPadOS 27/27.0.1 - and as such, the growing weight of evidence suggests introduction of a software bug affecting the iPad's charge controller.

In the first instance, you would be well advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page.

You can also initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to hands-on test and assess your iPad:

In addition, for all those impacted by this issue, you should submit a Bug Report via Apple's Product Feedback portal - as, until Apple receives a sufficient volume of reports, it may not assign resources to investigate and resolve the issue. For iPad and iPadOS:

Feedback - iPad - Apple

When submitting a report, ensure that you include details of your iPad model and the installed version of iPadOS within the body pf the report. Don't rely on the pick-list alone as this may not include the most recent version of iPadOS.

Several reports have been seen here concerning charging issues following update to iPadOS 27.

These support pages should help with troubleshooting battery and charging issues:

If your iPad won't charge – Apple Support

Troubleshooting generally requires substitution of the Power Adapter and cable for another known-good item. Most models of iPad require a Power Adapter rated at 12W (i.e., 2.4A @5V) or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters (1.0A @5V) intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow. Many recent models of iPad are supplied with an Apple USB-C 20W USB-C Power Adapter.

Some third-party USB-C power adapters (and portable PowerBanks) may not support USB PD (Power Delivery). Power Delivery mutually negotiates the charging voltage; the source, load and cable are all elements involved in the negotiation protocol. Unless the Power Adapter explicitly supports USB PD, it will almost certainly fail to reliably charge the iPad; proprietary charging standards, such as QC (Quick Charge), are not supported. As USB PD is in part influenced by system software, the installed version of iPadOS may have some impact upon charging performance.

If you continue to experience difficulties when using an appropriate Apple Power Adapter of 12W or greater, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. If the battery has been depleted completely, it might take more than 30min until the iPad starts up.

unlucky, after few days trying to charge it's not turning on. I bring it to repair shop, he check with charging station with ammeter and it show 5V-0.1A, 0.1A means the battery is dead (he said so).

when he opened my ipad up, I can see two batteries connected together; one has a slightly swollen casing, while the other is still in good condition. And the dead one make the whole ipad stop charging and working.

He said the ios 27 could contribute further damaging a failing to the battery and make it die faster...

Fix it by replace a brand new battery, cost me $33

I saw some guys could bring the ipad back up by charging it for few hour or overnight on internet, you could try that first before go for repair.

It’s 100% a software issue. Apple authorised service centre advised me to try an independent repair shop, cause it’s cheaper. I did that. The technician opened the iPad, installed a battery from another iPad, and updated the device to iPadOS 27.0.1. At the same time, he installed my original battery into another iPad and charged it successfully. It worked without any issues. He then put my original battery back into my iPad, and everything is working normally again. I haven’t yet drained the battery to 0%, but this seems to confirm that iOS 27 caused some kind of charging-related issue, particularly when the iPad is fully discharged. The battery itself appears to be fine, as it can still be charged and used in another device.

My son’s iPad finally got up to 7% after several hours and then continued to charge until it reached 100%. It took a while and we measured the current draw, which was 0.09A initially and eventually went up to 2.1A. It is now working normally and still has iPadOS 27. I would say leave it on a known good and fast charger (20+ Watt) for 24 hours and see what happens.

This is what I did. (Note that booting the iPad once from this error state didn’t fix the issue for me, and it still continued to have charging problems when I let the iPad battery totally drain a second time.)

Also note that I have a very new Apple OEM 20W USB C lightning charger and an Apple OEM 2M USBC-Lightning cable. I purchased these before I began experiencing these problems and updating the iPad to iPadOS27.

So I had to leave the iPad plugged in for several separate long periods of 5-6 hours of uninterrupted charge, where it would not turn on but showed it was charging.

I tried home button and power button reset but that did not work.

I think after the fourth charging session (during the second time I had to use this method) I held down the power button and finally the iPad booted up.

Other than that I’m afraid I cannot offer any other advice as I believe that this is a software bug, and will not be resolved through replacing the battery (and if you have an older 9th generation iPad) it’s likely that you’re out of warranty, and would incur a service fee.

You must just keep charging and continue periodically trying to power up the iPad until it finally boots up.

Update: flashing the ipad to ipadOS 27.0.1 won't fix the issue

I had this issue on ipadOS 27.0, fix it by replacing battery. After let new battery die again, it not turning ON anymore. I have tried to flash ipadOS 27.0.1 using 3uTools by put it to DFU mode, but the issue still there, showing red battery and won't boot.

I can say it's 100% software bug now, ipad won't charge when battery reach 0. Even I did battery replacement. Not hardware, not charger, totally software.

If you want Apple take care of this bug, please report it to Feedback - iPad - Apple. They will fix it when they have a huge amount of tickets relate to the same issue.

Thanks for your response.

I had the iPad on charge overnight for around 7 hrs and it hadn’t charged, I did some research and did a few force closes during the morning while it was plugged in without anything appearing to be happening, I’ve just checked it again late afternoon and it’s finally started and has reached 15% battery charge.

Found the trick, guys: you need to heat it up while charging. You can use a hair dryer, or—like I did—wrap it up and place it on top of the dishwasher while it's plugged in.

After it wouldn't charge all day, I placed it on the dishwasher for 30 minutes while charging, and it powered on.

iPad Gen 9, iPadOS 27.0.1 (27.0 should be the same).

The thing is, when I updated to iOS27, and after I was done using the ipad, my battery was full, when I turned it off. I did not use it the next day and I tried to turn it on the 2nd day and I had the battery icon issue. So, I am not sure if the battery being depleted had anything to do with the issue, as mine was fully charged, then it was dead. I believe it was a software update issue, that caused them to malfunction, battery full or depleted, and somehow, leaving the ipad on the charger for a long time, snapped it out of, whatever was going on. So far, updating to iOS27.0.1 has not caused the issue to return, with a full battery. I do not let my batteries run to depletion so, I cannot say if updating to the new version will solve that issue for you.
