Studio Display flickering on two units and multiple Macs

Studio Display flickering since last year — two units, multiple Macs, still not solved (macOS Tahoe 26.5.2)

I've been dealing with this flickering issue since last year and I'm hoping someone here has figured out the actual cause. Currently on macOS Tahoe 26.5.2.

My setup and what I've ruled out so far:

- I have two identical Studio Displays, both using the original Apple cables since day one. Same cables the whole time, never swapped for third-party ones.

- Originally I ran both displays at the same time with a 16" MacBook Pro M3. My first theory was that driving two 5K displays was overloading the Mac, so I switched to using only one display at a time. The flickering continued.

- I also suspected peripherals connected directly to the Studio Display (iPad, other devices) might be involved. Disconnecting them made no difference either.

- For a while the flickering became rare — isolated incidents, easy to ignore. Over the last few days it has clearly gotten worse again.

- Most importantly: it happens on BOTH displays, and it still happens with a single display connected to a Mac mini M4 (also on 26.5.2). So it's not one faulty unit and it's not one specific Mac.

- I've already tried changing the color profile (P3-D65, etc.) and the other commonly suggested workarounds. No luck.

I still haven't worked out a pattern or a reliable trigger. Apple asked me to bring a display in for evaluation, but these things are bulky to transport and there's no Apple Store in my city, so that's a real hassle for something I increasingly suspect is a software bug rather than hardware. Two units failing identically across two different Macs on the same macOS version points that way.

I've seen several similar reports here in the community, many of them tied to Tahoe. Has anyone found an actual fix, or at least identified what triggers it? Any suggestions appreciated.

some observations:

Both the Macs you are using are ThunderBolt-3 or -4 Macs, not Thunderbolt-5

Users have had more crashing and trouble when setting 120 Hz or Adaptive sync (which means 120 Hz and sometimes less) on ThunderBolt--3 and -4 Macs, much less at 60 Hz fixed.

On at least one of these displays, Tahoe was required because it contained a firmware update. (maybe for the XDR version).

<< driving two 5K displays was overloading the Mac, >>

additional displays of any supported resolution each add a trivial amount of additional processing. A hardware-assist sends out an entire screenful of display data at a time. What additional displays consume is memory bandwidth. Apple silicon Macs are memory bandwidth beasts, there is no shortage.

<< peripherals connected directly to the Studio Display (iPad, other devices) might be involved. >>

Display data has TOP priority for data transfers -- peripheral data is strictly second, and does not interfere.
