MacBook Pro and iPhone: Universal Clipboard and AirPods switching issues

Hello everyone,

I’m having two weird issues between my M3 Pro MacBook Pro and iPhone 16 Pro.

Recently, Universal Clipboard stopped working between my Mac and iPhone. Around the same time, my AirPods also stopped automatically switching between the two devices. Now, whenever I switch from my Mac to my iPhone (or vice versa), they show as Not Connected and I have to manually go into Bluetooth and tap them.

Both devices are on the same Apple Account, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth are enabled. I’ve also tried restarting both devices.

Does anyone know how I can properly reset whatever handles Continuity/Handoff/Bluetooth without having to completely reset my devices?

Thanks!

Hi,

Google AI says:

Universal Clipboard and AirPods switching problems between a MacBook Pro and an iPhone are usually caused by temporary glitches in Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Handoff settings.

Fix Universal Clipboard

  • Toggle Handoff: Turn Handoff off and back on on both your iPhone (Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity) and your Mac (System Settings > General > AirLink & Handoff or AirPlay & Handoff).
  • Cycle Connections: Turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off and on again on both devices, or restart the devices entirely.
  • Check Account & Proximity: Confirm both devices use the same Apple Account and stay within 10 meters (30 feet) of each other.
  • Terminal Refresh (Mac): If it remains broken, reset the service by running the clipboard sharing commands in the Mac Terminal app.

Fix AirPods Automatic Switching

  • Verify Apple Account: Ensure your AirPods are paired with an iPhone or Mac signed into the same Apple Account.
  • Reset Automatic Connection: On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the "i" icon next to your AirPods, select Connect to This iPhone, and change it from Automatically to When Last Connected to This iPhone if you want to stop unwanted switching.
  • Update Firmware: Make sure both your Apple devices and AirPods run the latest software updates.
