MacBook Neo store display demo loop stuck with black screen

I'm not a store employee and frankly, the store employees don't care to try to fix this.

Local Walmart, MacBook Neo display. I'm assuming someone managed some combination of keystrokes to get it jammed up. It has looked like this for months:

The black portion of the screen does not ever go away.

I tried a power button restart, thinking the demo loop had some provision to reset itself and continue. No, it doesn't. It starts up, comes to that screen and stops.

You can see from the icons across the top that it's a normal lock screen. The cursor works and moves around just fine.

I have gotten as far as doing a long-press startup and getting to the options. I did not see any obvious choices in there for setting up a kiosk. I also didn't feel comfortable doing a Time Machine restore on it unless I absolutely knew what it was going to do.

Does anyone have any experience in resetting these store-display kiosks? It's otherwise going to stay this way until it's taken away and updated.

Signed,

A happy customer who keeps an eye on Apple displays.

The machine is defective. They are designed to restore themselves every night after the store closes. The machine needs to be pulled off display and warranty returned to Apple. The software installed is not user serviceable. If you’re concerned and want to follow through on the device report your experience to a Walmart manager, not an employee.

Excellent suggestion by @kaz-k.

You can also try clearing the NVRAM by using the following Terminal command while booted into Recovery Mode (Terminal can be accessed from the Utilities menu on the menubar). Reboot the laptop so the default settings will be pulled from the NVRAM.

nvram -c

I guess you could also try running Disk Utility First Aid on the hidden Container as described in the following Apple article:

You can also try running the Apple Diagnostics although I doubt they will show any problems. Maybe just running the diagnostics could be enough to effect a change so it may boot normally (again doubtful).

It's been on display and jammed up for months. It doesn't reflect well on the brand and I've got a major Microsoft chip on my shoulder. I'm trying to do a good deed by fixing whatever some little kid probably did by mashing his hands on it. I sold two Neos while standing there, talking to other people who happened to see me trying to fix it.

You can try talking with the Store Manager to see if they care.

If no luck there, then maybe report this incident to Apple corporate. Apple corporate may have a few words with Walmart to ensure Walmart is not tarnishing Apple's brand with a malfunctioning device (even if it is just a software issue caused by whatever Walmart may have done to the unit). Apple really does not like having their products making them look bad.

Heck, maybe even informing the store manager that you will be reporting this to Apple may get the manager to take some action to fix the display unit.

Always be calm & polite though.

Both good tips but, I'm wondering how much I can do without knowing a password? Remember: this is a store display. I talked to one of the people working electronics and they knew nothing about it. It reboots to the locked screen, at which point I assume the kiosk software takes over.

So not sure I'm going to get to a command menu, disk utility or anything else. I already tried Command-Tab to see if it would switch to any other app and it ignored me.

I also wondered if it might be some flavor of Keynote presentation with a password lock and set to loop. None of the Keynote keyboard shortcuts worked (black screen, white screen, first slide, last slide, etc).

I think found your issue:

Local Walmart,

A store demo model is not set up to be used as a regular computer. They should know that, but here we've seen them pull some pretty dumb stunts with Apple devices.

I do not think there is evil intent. Rather it is likely because of the practice of "big-box" department stores rotating personnel through different departments. "Jacks of all trades but masters of none" was never more true. What you seldom get is true tech knowledge and skill in one department.

Return it and get your money back. Otherwise you have a very expensive theater prop. Neither Apple nor your fellow end users here can help you with this.

Chapter two:

Had some shopping to do so today was time to give 'er a go.

Force restarted the machine, got the startup options, started in safe mode.

In safe mode, there is no change. Black screen at the bottom. All the menu items are disabled (the machine beeps if you try). Restarting again and it's the same, no change to previous.

I have to say that I find it odd the programmers responsible for this would not make it so the machine does a self-restore after any restart event. Looks like this one is going to stay this way until the Neo 2 comes out and replaces it.
