Auto-hidden macOS menu bar fails to appear in full-screen

Title: Auto-hidden menu bar fails to appear in full-screen mode after extended uptime

System Environment:

  • macOS Version: macOS Golden Gate 27.0
  • Hardware: MacBook Pro (16-inch, Nov 2023) with Apple M3 Pro and 18 GB Memory
  • Display: Built-in display used alongside a BenQ MA270U external monitor

Description:

When using an application in full-screen mode (toggled via the green window control button), the auto-hidden menu bar eventually stops appearing when the mouse pointer is moved to the top edge of the screen.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Configure the system settings to automatically hide and show the menu bar.
  2. Boot the Mac and use it normally for a while (the issue does not occur immediately after a fresh boot).
  3. Open any application and enter Full-Screen mode.
  4. Move the mouse cursor to the absolute top edge of the screen to reveal the menu bar.

Expected Behavior:

The menu bar should slide down smoothly and become fully interactive.

Actual Behavior:

The menu bar remains completely hidden and unresponsive to the mouse hover, making it impossible to access app menus or system icons without exiting full-screen mode.

Additional Notes:

A complete system restart temporarily resolves the problem, but the bug consistently returns after some hours of usage. The issue might be related to how the WindowServer handles the UI state when switching focus between the built-in display and the external monitor.

Additional Full-Screen Behavior Issues:

  • Escape Key Unresponsive: I am sometimes unable to exit full-screen mode by pressing the Escape (Esc) key.
  • Persistent Window Controls: In certain applications, the top window control buttons (close, minimize, and full-screen) incorrectly remain visible on the screen even after the application has fully transitioned into full-screen mode.

There have been many issues reported with Full Screen behavior, Mission Control and Spaces on macOS 27 Golden Gate, especially regarding the way Full Screen apps and app switching are handled. Some have been resolved by identifying and removing incompatible 3rd party extensions, others are bona fide bugs.

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

If that does not correct the issue, test in a new user account. A newly-created user account will have all settings at default, and if the issue does not occur in that new account then it provides guidance on what may need to be changed to correct the issue.

Add a user or group on Mac - Apple Support

Once the testing is complete, the new account can easily be deleted.

Delete a user or group on Mac – Apple Support

Those steps will help to isolate the problem.

It might help to download and run EtreCheck, written by a long-time forum member. The free version is fine. Post the full report using the Additional Text button. No personal information is revealed.

If the issue persists in safe mode and a new user account, that suggests that it's a bug that Apple needs to address. Bugs can be reported to Apple here:

Feedback - macOS - Apple

Reporting issues like this to Apple is the only way to get them fixed. They do prioritize bugs based on frequency of reports, so the more people who report it, the faster it will be addressed.

Hi,

I did a quick test on a fresh user account and the issue didn't immediately reproduce, but I haven't had the chance to do long-term testing there. Ultimately, I had absolutely zero issues on the previous macOS version with my exact current workflow and apps. These problems only started after the recent update. While third-party apps might be triggering the behavior, I strongly believe this is an OS-level window management bug.

Here are the specific behaviors I’ve observed, which might help point to the root cause:

  • Menu Bar / Window Controls unresponsive: When I make an app full-screen, moving the mouse to the absolute top edge often fails to reveal the menu bar or the traffic light buttons. Workaround: If I swipe up with 3 fingers on the trackpad to open Mission Control, and then click back into the full-screen app, the hover function starts working again and the menu bar appears. This happens multiple times throughout the day.
  • Blurry Text: For example, when I use Google Chrome in full-screen on my built-in display, the text on the browser tabs randomly becomes blurry. If I move the mouse to the top edge and the menu bar successfully drops down, the UI forces a redraw, the blurriness disappears, and the text returns to normal.
  • Stuttering Animations: When using the 3-finger horizontal swipe on the trackpad to switch between different full-screen apps, the animation stutters and the transition is noticeably laggy/not smooth.

All of these issues do not happen immediately after a fresh system restart. The system works fine initially, but the bugs start occurring after a while once the Mac has been running and applications are open.

As I mentioned, my exact same app setup ran perfectly smoothly before this OS update. Has anyone else experienced these specific full-screen/menu bar issues, or found a permanent fix?
