Thank you! Your answer was not exactly what I needed, but gave me the hint to figure it out. Background, I'm new to iphone, had ipad for years. This was not happening on ipad or PC and only started happening on iphone. Iphone had worked fine the first month. Then: blam. It's a college exchange server and school no longer supplies tech support to students 🤯 I hesitated to change outlook password because it affects all college apps on all devices. (Yes, have to change pwd every semester, which is pain enough, and yes, I should be using a pwd manager)

What clued me in to the culprit: When I went to Microsoft site, the word Authenticator jumped out at me. Yes! a clue! When I went to Authenticator, the ~require password on opening~ had been turned ON. I turned it off. I can't even find that screen now, so I can't give exact wording.

It's working now. Thank you for saving my sanity.

You are welcome.

Excellent job troubleshooting!

Frankly, I think is evolutionary that colleges would require you to change your password every semester —it’s a matter of network integrity and its vulnerability to cyberattacks. To take it up a notch, I’d recommend speaking with the Web Master (the person who administrate your network) asking them if something is not configured as it should be on your end.
