The HP LaserJet Pro M15w printer is listed as a supported AirPrint model in Apple's https://mfi.apple.com/account/airprint-search. This means that it should be compatible with the latest macOS versions as well. See also About AirPrint - Apple Support.
Would it be correct to assume that your printer is wirelessly connected to a Wi-Fi router, the same router as your iMac?
If necessary, try a full power-cycle sequence. Power off the router, the printer and the Mac. Wait a couple of minutes. Then power on the router. Wait a minute. Power on the printer. Wait another minute. Power on the Mac. Any change?

some routers by default keep 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz wifi as seperate network same with wired ethernet
if the devices are on separate networks they can't communicate unless one configures the router to bridge the networks.
how one goes about doing so depends on the router
this is how tp-link routers do it

Thanks. I believe the printer is connected to the same router for the mac - there are no other routers, unless one of my other devices. (iphone, ipad, tv) caused some interference somehow. FWIW, I printed a report and it says its connected, wireless on, status ready and lists the IP address. The blue wifi light is also solid. However, it remains disconnected from my mac. I went ahead and added the printer using the IP address but when I selected the option to print it was " Unable to connect to the ip address due to an error." No error listed. Otherwise, I did do a full power-cycle sequence last night but I will try again unless you have other advice.
