17 Pro Max, hot after iOS 27 update.

My 17 Pro Max is getting hot to the touch after updating to iOS 27. Before the update it wouldn’t get hot. I measured the temperature taping my Fluke probe to the screen and it came out 121 degrees Fahrenheit. That seems excessive as over 113 degrees I’m told causes damage.

I have turned down the performance for the games I like to play. Seems like a phone barely a year old should be heating up playing simple Minecraft and World of Warships.

Changes in software such as upgrades or new apps may introduce new features which may add to power drain and heat generation. Check Settings > Battery to see if there are apps running that use a lot of power. If there are, decide if you can turn off a service such as Settings > General > Background app refresh when an app is in the background, or Settings > Privacy > Location Services. If you have just updated system software, read posts about indexing in this thread: iPhone 15 overheating - Apple Community

An iOS update may require subsequent reorganization of files and a short term increase in heat and battery drain until the task is done. Wait a few days and see if the issue persists.

About Apple software updates - Apple Support

says: “Immediately after completing an update, particularly a major release, you might notice a temporary impact on battery life and thermal performance. This is normal, as your device needs time to complete the setup process in the background, including indexing data and files for search, downloading new assets, and updating apps.”

Welcome and thank you for reaching out. 🤗

It is normal for an iPhone to run warmer than usual for a day or two after a major iOS update due to background processes like indexing.

However, if the issue persists, there are several steps you can take to resolve it:

  • Wait it out — Background tasks like photo indexing and data syncing can cause the phone to heat up temporarily after an update.
  • Update your apps — Third-party apps may need updates to run efficiently on the new iOS version. Check the App Store for any available updates.
  • Check your charger — Using a high-wattage charger can cause the phone to heat up. Try using a standard 20W charger or a different power source.
  • Remove the case — Some cases can trap heat and prevent the phone from cooling down properly.
  • Enable Low Power Mode — This reduces background activity and can help lower the phone's temperature.

If your iPhone continues to overheat, you may want to contact Apple Support for further assistance.

Good Luck! 👋🏼😉
