Mac mini won't wake from sleep

If I've left my Mac, allowing it to sleep after the time period I set in the "Lock Screen" setting, I sometimes (but not always) can't wake it up again. I have to resort to forcing it to shut down, by holding the on-off button.

Is this because of some setting I haven't got wrong? Or is it an OS problem? Or is the Mac faulty?

I have Tahoe 26.6.2 on a Mac mini.

Test the following Energy and Lock Screen settings:

Turn On "Prevent automatic sleeping when display is off"

Set "Turn display off when inactive" to 5 or 10 minutes

Leave the Mac Mini On and only allow the display(s) to turn Off

Do not manually Sleep from the Apple Drop Down menu

Shut Down the Mac when away for a day or more

The Mac mini uses very little power idling with the display(s) off during times of none usage.

If you come and go a lot during the day, then just leave it idling between visits.

Then decide if you want to leave it on or shutdown over-night.

Running macOS Tahoe implies you have an Apple Silicon Mini.

See if the following Apple article may apply:

FYI, here is an Apple article showing the publicly acknowledged free repair programs available....keep in mind Apple will sometimes have some secret repair programs as well.

What is the exact model of your Mini? You can get this information by clicking the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac".

Are any external devices connected to the computer when this occurs? If so, then try disconnecting the external devices before putting the system to sleep to see if that makes any difference.

You may want to run the third party app EtreCheck and posting the complete report so we can examine it for possible clues.

Mac Powering Off Intermittently:

I. Update or Upgrade the macOS:

So, when did this all begin? Was it after an update installation? If so, it might be a bug in the update. So, update your macOS to the latest-compatible version (macOS 26.7 or macOS 27) IMPORTANT: Be certain you create a Time Machine Backup of your Mac both prior to and after installing updates or any other software installations. That way, you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong afterwards.

II. Troubleshooting Mac Power:

A. Black Mac Screen:

Go Here: If your Mac doesn't Turn On or Start Up - Apple Support

Using External Devices: Try Resetting the SMC and NVRAM, but this time, using an external keyboard. Connect an external monitor and see if you get an output.

B. Mac Power Issues:

Try a New Charger:

If it is currently charging from a charger, then use a new charger:
