Why is it so hard to get a tax invoice from Apple?

Why is it so hard to get a tax invoice from Apple? I'm trying to obtain one for my recent Apple care annual subscription and it seems the only way is through "report a problem" (that's ridiculous, for starters) but even then, it only shows a receipt with no GST information. You then have to go through support and even then they tell you it requires a phone call. Is this 2026? Very unprofessional.

Great in theory to bring it up with Apple, but there is literally no option on their help ticket section that relates to this

This support page has information about Apple support and service ➔ Contact Apple Support - Apple Support If live support options (chat and/or telephone) are available they will show near the bottom left.

- Telephone numbers may only work when calling from the same country.

- Chat options (telephone numbers appear as active links, not plain text) may depend upon cellular connectivity. If a number shows as an active link, click on it to see additional options.

- If chat is not available on the top level support page, try selecting your hardware and narrow down your issue to see if a support article offers a support link offering chat. For example, the contact support link on this page Check your Apple Account balance - Apple Support offers a chat link about emptying account balance even on a computer where the top level page does not offer any chat.

With an iPhone, iPad, or Vision, you may be able to chat using the Apple Support App if it is available in your country —> https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-support/id1130498044

I was logged in to the Apple Australia site and didn't realise this was international. Yes, it's pretty normal to get a proper invoice - not talking about EOY - just an invoice showing the purchase and if GST was charged. I'm registered for GST as an Australian business, and if GST is charged, I need an invoice to prove payment so I can claim that tax component back. They legally have to provide it if requested, but when I eventually found the information, they then insisted that they would need to phone me first, which is ridiculous.

Contact Apple and see if they can provide you with one. Here in the USA prices do not include taxes so it is standard to see tax listed separately because they can vary greatly. I know in Europe (and my one visit to Australia long ago) that there is a flat rate tax in each country and a price includes tax. You never see it listed separately. However, it is easy to find out what that country-wide tax rate is and then calculate. A quick web search reveals that in Australia that is 10%.

If a company or organization can purchase tax-free, they can apply for that separately in advance as indicated in the articles I provided earlier.

Thanks for your comment, Limnos. It’s actually not that simple here, though. The tax rate is 10% but it’s not always applied, as not all businesses need to register for GST. And even if they do, they can either include it in the total cost or add it on top. Businesses registered for GST can claim back any GST paid (yes, it’s that confusing here haha) but without it shown on the invoice, we can’t comply with our tax obligations.

I would assume you're aware of this, but what you're referring to is use tax.

If any company has a physical location in your state, then they're supposed to charge you the appropriate sales tax on any purchases.

If they don't, then some may charge the tax on a taxable item anyway, but others may not because they aren't required to. That's where use tax comes in. Basically, it's the business way of saying you have to be honest and submit what would be the taxable amount on your own.
