iPhone 17e lock screen turns off after 5 seconds despite 5-minute auto-lock

Hello folks, new to this community. Thank you for willingness to help! My new iPhone 17e (iOS 26.6.1) replaces a17e I broke.

Issue: lock screen turns off 5 seconds although I have tried these: a. auto lock is set for 5 minutes & b. in the setting for “Face ID and passcode” the “Require attention for Face ID” is turned off. Lots of un-useful info out on the search engines. Can you please suggest how I can correct this?

Grateful for any help!

Update, sorry WheelieNick, but Attention Aware settings had no effect either on or off. Still blacked out at 5 seconds. However pushing either volume button did add an extra 5 seconds per push. Kind of annoying but a reasonable work around.
Hey Apple people, if you check these posts, can you please correct this very annoying problem?

Apple isn't here, so no Apple people will be checking these posts. This is a user to user only forum. And I remain convinced there is nothing wrong with your phone. You may not like that the lock screen is hard coded to go black after 5 seconds, unless you do something with your phone, like push the side button every 5 seconds as you've discovered. There is no setting you can change to keep the lock screen open longer and yours is doing exactly what it's supposed to do.

I also still wonder what value you'd get if the lock screen could remain open longer? There's little you can do on your phone on the lock screen. You can quickly look at the time, your battery/cell signal/Wifi, etc., status as well as any widgets you've added to your lock screen. But to use the phone you need to swipe up to your home screen.

What you've described is exactly how it's supposed to work with your lock screen. If you don't interact with your iPhone when the lock screen opens, it will lock after 5 seconds. The Auto Lock feature you are referring to is solely intended to work after you've unlocked your phone.

Hi there please try this

  • Turn on Attention Aware Features: Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and turn on Attention Aware Features. This does the opposite of what you might expect—it uses the TrueDepth camera to detect if you are actively looking at the screen. As long as the phone sees your eyes on the lock screen, it will keep the display awake instead of shutting off at the 5-second mark.
  • The Button Trick: If you are reading a long lock screen notification and the display starts to dim, pressing one of the Volume Up or Down buttons will reset the lock screen timer and keep it awake without unlocking the device.
  • Use the Notificatn Center:  pull down the Notification Center from the home screen after unlocking your phone. This way, you can read your notifications under your full 5-minute Auto-Lock window.

Thanks, but I find this to be inaccurate. I experimented just now: held my 17e phone 18” from my face, used the right side button to bring up the lock screen, actively looked at various features of the photo displayed. Went black after 5 seconds.
Tried the same with the phone 12” from my face, actively looked at various features of the photo displayed. Went black after 5 seconds.

Lock screen is not intended to stay open any longer than that. I have seen many people say they don't have time to read all the notifications. If that is what we are discussing then open to the home screen, drag down the notifications and do them from that list.

With my touch ID device I have to unlock to the home screen to do that every time.

I'm not sure you got the difference between Lock Screen and Home Screen here. See my response as the Authors phone is doing as it was designed to do. Simply said, it doesn't matter what Auto Lock setting someone uses. It won't apply to the Lock Screen. They have to interact with the Lock Screen in some way for it to not lock after 5 seconds, regardless of Attention Aware settings.
