I have just bought a 2012 Apple Mac desk top, and I am trying to download Microsoft word, but every time that I try to download I am getting this message "why am i getting (null) can't be installed on "macintosh HD" because macOS version 14 or later is required". I am new to an apple computer, and I am not sure what I can do. Could someone please help me and let me know what to do, or if there is anything that I can do. As I really need to be able to download things, as I am a student and studying, so Microsoft word is a must on my desktop. Thank you so much for your help.
I don't think you will be able to install Microsoft Word on that computer.
- That roughly fourteen-year-old iMac cannot run anything later than macOS 10.15.* (Catalina).
- Microsoft has a policy of only supporting the three most recent versions of macOS. At the moment, those are macOS 15 (Sequoia), macOS 26 (Tahoe), and macOS 27 (Golden Gate). (Because Golden Gate just came out recently, the downloads on Microsoft's site might still support macOS 14 (Sonoma).)
- Catalina is four major versions older than Sonoma.
LibreOffice is your best bet. The current version of LibreOffice no longer supports Catalina, but unlike Microsoft, The Document Foundation keeps an archive of old, unsupported versions.
Use The Document Foundation Wiki – Documentation/System Requirements to identify the latest major version of LibreOffice that will run on Catalina. There's a link to the archive in the middle of the main LibreOffice downloads page to which Rudegar linked.
