Consolidate Library: Copying files failed. The required file is in use.

I'm trying to move all my mp3s to the external hard drive.
I changed the location under iTunes preferences to the external hard drive and then when I go to Library-Manage Library-Consolidate, I received that error:
Copying files failed. The required file is in use.

I have no idea what file is in use.
I tried unchecking all the files in the library so it'll just copy files that I have checked only, that didn't work either.
Reboot the machine and open only iTunes, that didn't work.

Apple Support or ITunes Expert, please help.

Hi,

I just ran into the same problem.

It was an easy enough fix, when you try and consolidate again you will see the name of the song that is giving you trouble. For some or other reason this file has become corrupt and is most likely and issue with your HDD. Look at the name and then search for it in your iTunes library. Delete it and try to consolidate again.

Worked like a charm for me.

Good luck

I got the same problem.
Mine never told me the file in trouble. Gambit Hunt, where did you see it?
Has anybody any idea how to solve this problem?
I just want to move my library to an external HDD to free up some more space in my macbook, since my iTunes library is getting too large. Now, I used some space on the external HDD but can't free up any space because I don't know which files were copied and which weren't.

Thank you.

Rather than trying to consolidate the whole library in one go, select all your artists that begin with A, then option/right click on the selection and click *Consolidate Files*, repeat with the subsequent letters until all is done or you get a problem. Narrow down the selection until you can isolate the problem tracks. iTunes should update the location of each file after it has been successfully copied to the new location and will skip files that have already been consolidated.

Best of luck...

i found myself having the same problem after i wanted to copy my library to an external harddrive when suddenly my power cut off and the transfer was incomplete!

the problem was, that my library was partly on my mbp party on the hdd and i couldn't continue with the copyprocess.

"copying files failed, because you don't have permission to change your ITUNES media folder or a folder within it."

i found out that a lot of my mp3's weren't connected to its origin (mainly the oldest ones),

my itunes library file was corrupt!

A recover from my time machine backup could resolve the problem. all mp3's have to be connected, no exclamation mark's should be visible (try randomly clicking mp3's to see if they play). <- like turingtest2 already said.

hope i could help

Well, I'm having the problem now so it's not resolved as far as the software goes. Taking the suggestion to attempt to consolidate chunks of my music at a time instead of the whole library, I'm partway through the C's and so far I've identified 15 songs and 4 whole albums that won't consolidate. There is absolutely no pattern that I can find as to what can and cannot consolidate. None of the files are locked. For instance the song Just Got Wicked by Cold on the album 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage will consolidate... the song She Said off of the same album by the same artist will not. It's very frustrating and annoying. All of the attributes are the same... I have almost 8000 songs so trying to consolidate using this chunk method will just take a ridiculous amount of time. This just is aweful programming to fail and stop execution of an operation on thousands of files with no useful output.

I looked at the file permissions and attributes in terminal and they are identical between a song that copies and one that doesn't and I don't run antivirus. Since the songs play fine and I can actually manually copy them on the file system, I wouldn't think there would be disk corruption.

I use a MacBook, so the VBScripts aren't much use but I appreciate the effort.
