iPhone "unable to join network" in Wifi

I get this message when trying to join my own network (or any other free network). Bluetooth works fine. I have tried resetting Network settings.

iPhone, iPhone OS 3.0, iTunes 9.2.1

Depends what is asking for the passcode.

If you're resetting your modem/router network, Check the bottom of your modem/router to see if there are 4 digits anywhere. Next try four zeros.

I'd you are resetting you iPhone network it might be the last 4 digits of your phone number or four zeros.

I guess you could chech the owners manual of the network device you are resetting for info.

The public networks did require a password, I have a gym membership and they have a wifi based on my membership number and a 4 digit passkey.

I'll wait until Thursday when 4.1 is out, upgrade, see if I still have the same problem, if I do I'll send in a proper developer bug report as you suggest. I work in IT so hopefully I can word it well enough and give enough detail.

Hopefully an upgrade will do it and all will be well with the world. 🙂 I'll also try turning off all my devices at home, get the iPhone connected then turn them on one by one and see if I get any issues (and on which device). It could be some random setting I have on one of the mbp's

Thanks for all the feedback btw, much appreciated. Will let you know in Thursday.

For those who are having issues joining their home network on their iPhone, I reset my router and then reentered my SSID and security settings and passphrase. This fixed my issue.

I couldn't figure out why my one iPhone wouldn't connect to my home network but I had no problem with the other iPhone and iPad. I tried resetting the network settings on the iPhone and that didn't work.

I am a user just like you. If there is an Apple store close by, I would suggest you take it in, since you have reset you router and phone.

The best thing is to make an appointment for the genius bar online at http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/

Thursday is the date the next update is due out. So if the store is a ways away, you might want to wait until you try it.

Either way, connect to you computer and use iTunes to sync and back up your phone before you take it in or before you install the next upgrade.

Oh, one more thing. Next time, it would help if you started a new post if you have a particular problem not directly related to the one at the top. Yes it was about connecting to wifi, but you needed info on your passcode. The only reason I ask this is that now that I have helped you, had you started the thread, you could mark my advice as "helpful" or "Solved" your problem. That would help my rankings in the forum.

Please post back on what you find out.

To all of you who are suffering from the same issue, and have written about restarting, etc. my router - I tried that without success. But when I thought about it, I'm not surprised.

My phone can recognize any public Wi Fi, as I mentioned in an earlier post, but it will not connect to any network. Looks like I'm in need of a trip to the Genius Bar. I'll report back on what I find.

Thanks, James for reminding everyone to not "hijack" this issue for other discussions.

Hey

I'm the same. Since 4.0 update i've been unable to connect to any wireless network.
I tried everything : reset network settings, restore iphone as a new one, upgrading to 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, downgrading to 3.1.3, upgrading router firmware, trying all different security options on the router but still the same : "unable to join network" or "wrong password".

I guess the last option is to go to Apple Store but unfortunately my iphone isn't under warranty anymore.

Wouldn't you know it, I go into work today and my iphone comes up with "unable to join network". It worked on Saturday, I didn't change anything.
Today I changed and item and changed it back, then updated, nothing. I set security to none and tried again, then nothing. I checked with my iPad, to make sure we had a signal, yep we did. Then out of the blue, the phone connects. Put the security back in, update, and it continues to work.
Now if I can get the phone to connect to the remote ABS...

All I can say James is roll on 4.1 tomorrow and let's hope it fixes it for all of us. I work in IT and there's nothing worse than a seemingly random problem to solve, clearly they always turn out to not be random and based on some unacounted for factor.... We just haven't spotted it yet 🙂

4.1 did not help me, what about you?

At least with the speed increase of 4.1 I find out quicker that my iPhone Could not find the network...

Back to square one of trouble shooting before I turn in a bug report.

Likewise I got it to connect once by disabling the security on my airport and then re-enabling it. But when I got up this morning, same problem.

What I am finding is that it seems to drop the wifi connection and i suspect that's why it's failing. Something new for me today is that it constantly asks me for the password which it didn't before. I think by the time I get to put the password in the signal or connection has been lost. At least this is what I've been observing.

I know wifi in general works because I can connect to the public ones so it do seem to point to something around the router setup and how the iPhone deals with that.

I have a 3GS, is this a problem with the 4 as well or just earlier phones ? If it's just the earlier ones I may cut and run and buy a new one, but it does stick in my craw to give mr Jobs the cash for something that should just work

Hey all. I'm in the same boat....kind of. I have an old iPhone 3G that's running firmware 3.0 and my girlfriend just got her mom's old iPhone 3G. I activated the new phone with AT&T and updated to firmware 4.0.2 then couldn't connect to my home WiFi (Netgear WNDR3700). I'm thinking it must be related to the firmware because my iPhone 3G with 3.0 works just fine. But, the girlfriend's 3G with 4.0.2 won't connect; I just get the "unable to join network" message. I've gone through and reset everything and tried again, but to no avail. I'm also connecting to my router with 2 PCs (hardwired), and a late-2008 Aluminum MacBook (wireless) as well as my iPhone with no problems. I just can't get hers to work with the 4.0.2. I have a call scheduled with Apple Support, so maybe they'll have some answers. I'll keep checking back and will update if I get anything good for everyone. Good luck!

P.S. I'm an IT student and eager to get into the field. Some of you have mentioned that your in IT. What do you guys do and how did you get your start? I don't want to get this thread off track, just curious. Thanks again!
