Scanner not recognized by Photoshop

Hi there,

I bought a new iMac G5 four days ago only to find Photoshop CS5 was not recognizing the scanner on my two year old Samsung SCX 4500 Printer/Scanner (the printer works fine). I downloaded the most recent Samsung scanner driver (1.0) and Photoshop still doesn't recognize it. Both Preview and Image Capture recognize the scanner which enables me to scan and then upload to Photoshop, but that adds a step I'd rather avoid. Unfortunately it seems that a lot of people are losing printer/scanner compatibility when they upgrade.

Any thoughts on a fix?

thanks
dg

Thanks again TeenTitan. I went to Sane, found that it does list the SCX 4500 as compatible, but then I got lost as to how or what to download (backend, frontend, am I downloading code?). I am not tech savvy and might be missing something. Don't suppose you could list the steps for that? If it's too much I understand, but I couldn't figure out what to do.

A little lost

all the components for the mac can be found here:
http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/

you want to first download libusb as a binary for 10.6
http://www.ellert.se/PKGS/libusb-2009-09-10/10.6/libusb.pkg.tar.gz
and then install it

then download SANE backends as a binary for 10.6
http://www.ellert.se/PKGS/sane-backends-2010-01-17/10.6/sane-backends.pkg.tar.gz
then install

then download TWAIN SANE Interface as a binary for 10.6 and install
http://www.ellert.se/PKGS/TWAIN-SANE-Interface-2.9/10.6/TWAIN-SANE-Interface.pkg .tar.gz

reboot, open photoshop,
you should now have a "sane.." listed as an option as you would your old scanner.

TWAIN scanner drivers are still supported in Photoshop CS5, but the TWAIN support plugin is no longer installed by default.

You need to do the following:

• Go to the Adobe website. In the Download section, look for Photoshop CS5 updates.
• Download the "Photoshop CS5 12 Optional plugins" file for your language version of Photoshop.
• Once the download is complete, double-click the "CS5 Optional_PlugInsInstaller.dmg" file.
• Double-click the file "CS5 Optional Plug-Ins.mxp". The Adobe Extensions Manager will launch and the install process will start.
• When it is finished, quit the Adobe Extensions manager.

• Launch Photoshop CS5.

If the scanner driver is still not visible in the Import menu, your scanner driver may not be 64bit compatible. In this case:

• Right-click on the Photoshop CS5 application icon and select "Get Info".
• In the information window, check the box that says "Run in 32 bit mode".

This solved the scanner problem for me.

You mean it appears in the menu, but nothing happens when you select it?

In this case it would seem that Photoshop was able to load the scanner plugin, but cannot launch it. Unfortunately I don't have enough technical insight into what can cause this behaviour.

As a first step, I'd suggest that you go to your scanner manufacturer's website and download and install the latest version of the scanner software.

If your scanner is an older model whose driver hasn't been updated in a while, there is the possibility that it may simply have become incompatible. Photoshop CS3 could be run under Rosetta for better compatibility with older scanner drivers; CS5 no longer offers this option.
