Blank CDs and DVDs not recognized by iMac

I have a 2.4 GHz iMac that is not quite two years old. Recently the optical drive will not recognize any blank disks (CDs or DVDs) that are inserted, even though several brands were tried. It was working up until recently.

Suggestions?

Perhaps I mistook some symptoms on my iMac - all I had to do was slightly reduce the size of the files to be burned to the DVD, then it worked fine. I was confused by a couple of issues, however:

1. Shouldn't the blank DVD have shown up in the Finder? Beyond the initial inquiry into what action I'd like to be taken, the blank DVD didn't appear anywhere in the Finder and couldn't be mounted in the Disk Utility.
2. I recall usually getting a message that I needed XXX additional space to burn the DVD. In this case I didn't.
